The Purpose of the HOD  To study and make recommendations to the ACOEM Board of Directors concerning major policy matters affecting the affairs of ACOEM such as:  matters referred to it by the ACOEM Board of Directors or Executive Committee; and  matters brought up by delegates, as individuals or as representatives of a component or section.

 Take information and issues back to the various components for consultation and direction.  Nominate candidates for the Board of Directors.  The officers of the House of Delegates are members of the House/Board Liaison Committee  The Speaker-Elect and Recorder are members of Candidate selection Committee

How do you get elected to be Recorder?  Spend a lot of time on the house of delegates and participate on many workgroups and your colleagues get to know you and “size” you up for leadership positions, starting with the recorder.  Make connections and surround yourself with those who are as committed as you.

The HOD is  The powerhouse of the organization  It has been described sometimes as “rogue”

How did you get to this position?  I have been very active in the House of Delegates since I joined ACOEM in 1990  I represented my component- NECOEM  I belonged to a variety of sections  I was a leader of a work group  I actually submitted a resolution to change of the name from committees to work groups

Where and When?  We meet twice per year- just before the Spring AOHC(usually a Sunday)-It is a half day meeting and in November- either at ACOEM Headquarters or via conference call. This is a full day.  However, the HOD is a “year round house” and workgroups and task force work is done at the direction of the Speaker.  There are conference calls and the number of calls depends on the work that needs to get done.

The work???  Resolutions  These are recommendations by members  The resolutions are given to one of four workgroups  The team of the workgroups discuss and then present to the HOD and a vote is made to accept and send to the Board for Approval

Why do I belong and Participate??

 When I was transitioning from internal medicine to occupational medicine, ACOEM was there to guide me as well as provide education. I want to give back to the organization that helped me become successful.  I also feel strongly in what I do and need a voice to represent me  It is a great relationship builder, professionally and personally  I also believe and science has proven that connecting keeps us healthy and happy in life.

House of Delegates Work Groups The House is made up of eight standing work groups — Clinical Practice (CP), Components & Sections (CS), Credentials (CR), Education & Conferences (EC), External Affairs (EA), Internal Affairs (IA), Members (MB), and Scientific Affairs (SA). These groups of physician delegates and their chairmen are appointed by the Speaker of the House to consider resolutions and create work group reports. Work groups are encouraged to remain active throughout the year, primarily through electronic interaction.

Resolutions A resolution is a motion — presented in writing — for action by the House. Resolutions may be submitted by members, component societies, sections, the Board of Directors, House officers, or ACOEM councils, committees and task forces. Resolutions must be submitted to the Speaker at least four weeks in advance of the next House meeting, allowing the assigned work group time to study the resolution in preparation for the meeting. Later resolutions may be presented up to the time that the meeting starts but will be discussed at that meeting only if a simple majority of the delegates agree to consider it. Resolutions are voted on by the entire House of Delegates, and the Speaker submits passed resolutions as action items at the next Board of Directors meeting.
