Soccer and Track & Field Complex
UTPA Athletics is embarking on an unprecedented phase of rapid growth and advancement. One of the most critical needs for the UTPA Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is support for the renovation and construction of first-class athletic facilities. For recruiting purposes it is essential that our facilities exceed the expectations of prospective student-athletes and compare favorably to other institutions in the WAC and the nation. Maintaining facilities and strategically planning for the future is an ongoing process. Current major gift opportunities are available in facility campaigns, program enhancements, recruiting funds, scholarship endowments and academic support service programs. Supporting these initiatives will provide the resources necessary to ensure that all of UTPA’s programs will remain competitive in WAC and on a national level. Whether you have personally benefited from Bronc athletics and want to commemorate your time at the University, or are simply a friend of the University who wants to contribute, the commitment you make will enhance the overall University experience for student-athletes and the UTPA community for many years to come. Funds generated from this project will go specifically into the facility project budget of whichever of the athletic programs the donor designates.
UTPA is constructing a soccer and track & field stadium to be built on campus property in-between Jackson Road and the UTPA Wellness and Recreation Sports Complex. The facility will have access from Jackson Road. Construction is expected to begin this spring, with a targeted completion date of August 2014 for the stadium and field areas. The construction of concessions, restrooms, offices/training, locker rooms, bleacher seating, lighting and press box will only begin with private funding. Upon completion, the UTPA Soccer and Track & Field Stadium will become the newest athletic facility on a growing campus of over 20,000 students and will serve as a focal point for welcoming spectators and participants from throughout the local Rio Grande Valley communities, the State of Texas, and the nation. In July 2013, UTPA joined the Western Athletic Conference, which features nine institutions hailing from nine separate states across the country. Beginning in the fall of 2015, the stadium will host a full home schedule of NCAA Division I men’s and women’s soccer. This will consist of 20-24 varsity matches, with associated scrimmages and practice sessions. Additionally, the track & field area surrounding the soccer field will host an intended two-four NCAA Division I Track & Field competitions, beginning with the 2015-16 academic year.
The initial construction phase of the soccer and track & field stadium will include the soccer field, track and field area. Later construction phases for the complex and stadium will allow for lighting, bleacher seating for 1,000 spectators, press box, concession, and rest room facilities. A third phase will include expanded seating (potentially in excess of 5,000 seats), expanded press box, practice fields, and visiting and home team amenities such as locker rooms, training rooms, team rooms, and offices for coaches. The initial soccer field will be of exceptional quality. As such, care will be taken to protect the high quality of the playing surface from adverse effects of extreme weather and wear-and-tear. Despite these precautions, it is expected that the soccer field/stadium will host numerous outside events, including professional matches, exhibitions, camps, clinics, and high school competitions.
