Dear Sponsor, On behalf of the Society of Petroleum Engineers Calgary Section Young Professional Group (SPE YP) I would like to thank you for your interest in supporting our vision of creating a more knowledgeable and engaged workforce in the energy industry. At the SPE YP, we recognize the importance of honoring our commitment to both new and continuing sponsors. I hope that this document will serve to outline the vision and strategy of our organization and provide you with a clear, concise reason as to why you should invest in our organization. The sponsorship table on page seven outlines the ways for your organization to gain greater involvement with the Young Professionals in our industry and will also detail what recognition you will receive for your efforts. To provide you a bit of background on our organization, the SPE YP is a subset of the SPE Calgary Section, which is currently the third largest section in the world with approximately 6,000 professionals of whom 1600 are YPs. A YP is loosely defined as a graduated professional within the petroleum industry who has less than 10 years of experience or is 35 years of age or less. Those of us on the YP committee strongly believe that it is of the outmost importance to engage these young professionals and equip them with the necessary knowledge and networks so that they may excel early on in their career. To accomplish this vision, the committee has developed a program that focuses on three main areas of development. They are:
Technical skills development through the monthly technical luncheon and seminar series. The luncheon series has featured domestic and internationally recognized experts from the petroleum industry and has been well attended in the past. The seminar series hopes to build on this success by providing a more detailed look at a particular technical issue.
Professional skills development through YP workshops. There are two main YP workshops per year that are held in conjunction with major SPE conferences and provide participants the opportunity for soft skill development while working alongside their fellow peers in industry.
Networking opportunities which are held frequently throughout the year. These allow for a more casual way of connecting and sharing information with other professionals in the industry.
I would like to once again thank you for your time and consideration. I am truly confident that our organization has and will continue to be a platform for young professional development and I invite you to share in our success. Sincerely,
Zsolt Vigh, Sponsorship Lead Society of Petroleum Engineers Young Professionals, 2014-2015
Past Partners We are proud to recognize our investment partners from last year. Without our sponsors, we would not have been able to achieve such success. We are thankful of the support we have received to date and hope to continue our success in the future.

What we do Technical Development With the industry moving towards a more and more unconventional resource focus, technical development early in one’s career has become more important than ever. The SPE YP focuses on technical development through two main channels: 1. Monthly technical luncheons. The monthly luncheons provide YP’s with the opportunity to hear from an industry technical expert while enjoying lunch. Topics ranging from case studies, to new technologies and current events have been covered during these luncheons. Examples of topics covered in 2014 have been listed below:
“The Shift in World Oil Dynamics; OPEC vs The New Producer” – Ian van Staalduinen, Managing Director A&D, BMO Capital Markets “Energy East - TransCanada is Ready” – Bob Eadie, Project Director & Advisor, TransCanada “Well Deformation in Unconventional Resources ” – Trent Kaiser, Principal Consultant, Noetic Engineering 2. Bi-Monthly technical seminars. i. The vision of the technical seminars is to provide YP’s with an opportunity to have a more in depth technical learning experience as compared to the monthly luncheons. Seminars are typically 3-4 hours in length and cover topics such as gas well deliquificiation, hydraulic fracture design and cap rock integrity in SAGD. A list of examples of topics covered in 2014 can be seen below.
“Gas Well Deliquificiation” –Dennis Hahn, Manager of Completions & Well Performance, Talisman Energy “Drilling Fluid Design” – Brent Warren, Technical Specialist, Matrix Drilling Fluids “Unconventional Production Forensics” – Robert Bachman, Reservoir Engineer Consultant, Taurus Reservoir Solutions Ltd.
What we do Professional
Development
In today’s dynamic energy industry, Young Professionals need to learn how to manage their own careers to ensure that they can adapt quickly to internal or external changes and continue to be valuable assets. The SPY YP recognizes the value in this and that is why soft skill development is the second cornerstone of focus for the group. Half day workshops are specifically dedicated to this effort, a summary of which is provided below. “Managing Change: From Canada’s Energy Strategy to your own Career.” Jackie Forrest, VP Energy Research with ARC Financial Corp. Pentti Karkkainen, Co-Founder & Senior Strategy Advisor, KERN Partners Glenn Tibbles, Vice President, Cenera “Choosing the Right Career Mindset” Heather Christie-Burns, CEO, High Ground Energy Michael Povaschuk, Vice President, RBC Rundle Gina Wozney, Thermal Production Specialist
Networking The third pillar of focus for the SPY YP is networking. From building enduring, mutually beneficial relationships, to staying on top of current events in the industry and at other companies and informally sharing knowledge and advice, the SPE strongly believes that networking is an essential component to the career of the Young Professional. Networking is promoted through a variety of events, a summary of which is provided below. “Thirst Third Thursday Networking Events” – Monthly gatherings at the Libertine where young professionals can network in an informal setting. “Annual Christmas Gala” – The SPE YP annual Christmas event. This year’s event will be held at National Beer Hall. This event will also serve as a fundraiser for the Calgary Food Bank. “Kimberly Ski Trip” – The group’s 7th annual ski trip to Kimberly Ski resort. “Curling Bonspiel” – The group’s annual curling tournament. To be held in April. “Bowl for Kids” – The group’s annual charity fundraiser event. To be held in March.
