Mapping the Soils of Our National Parks A Cooperative Ecosystem Study Unit in partnership with the National Park Service Eugene F. Kelly, PhD – Principal Investigator
Colorado State University Soil Resources Program
Colorado State University and the National Park Service have entered into a Cooperative Agreement with the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences to support the NPS Soil Resources Inventory and to assist the agency with the use of soils data and the development of innovative approaches of the utilization of soils information and analytical tools. The CSU Soil Resources Program is obtaining applicable soil surveys and information for 270 + National Parks.

Pedon Descriptions The smallest unit or volume of soil that contains all the soil horizons of a particular soil type, usually having a surface area of 10.76 square feet or approximately 1 square meter and extending from the ground surface down to bedrock. American Heritage Dictionary
Pedon Descriptions
Map Unit Descriptions A map unit is a collection of areas defined and named the same in terms of their soil components or miscellaneous areas or both. Each map unit differs in some respect from all others in a survey area and is uniquely identified on a soil map. Each individual area on the map is a delineation.
