FLOODED
Winding down at the end of a long holiday weekend, Steve Archer got the phone call no facilities manager ever wants to receive…“The pipes burst and the building is flooded.”

BEFORE
As the director of facilities for the Nevada Cancer Institute, Mr. Archer is often the “first-responder” in dealing with building-related emergencies. His job requires him to make a quick assessment of the problem, take immediate action to prevent more damage, document all aspects of the incident for insurance requirements and begin the work with the maintenance and construction contractors and suppliers to repair damage. Fortunately, a year earlier Mr. Archer selected Tandus Centiva’s Powerbond®, a hybrid resilient sheet flooring, as the primary flooring for the building’s 60,000 square feet. While Mr. Archer selected Powerbond for its long-term performance attributes—he never envisioned it withstanding a flood with two inches of standing water for more than two days. “Any other flooring surface would have been completely ruined,” said Mr. Archer. “Amazingly, after the water was removed and the Powerbond was cleaned and sanitized, it looked like it did when it was newly installed.” How can Powerbond withstand floods, extreme traffic and abuse that would destroy other types of floorcoverings? The answer is the unique heterogeneous construction of a closed-cell cushion and nylon wear layer that creates a wall-to-wall moisture barrier, preventing liquids from penetrating to the subfloor.
“After the water was removed and the Powerbond was cleaned and sanitized, it looked like it did when it was newly installed.” The extreme durability of Powerbond and the simple and effective maintenance procedures help make it the most fiscally responsible option available to building owners. Mr. Archer says Powerbond’s ability to withstand the recent flooding provides all the evidence he needs to justify his investment. “No question that our decision to install Powerbond saved us a lot of time and money,” added Mr. Archer. “I’m glad I don’t have to worry about the floorcovering in our building for the next 25 years.” Not only is Powerbond durable and money-saving, but it also supports a healthier indoor environment by improving building acoustics, providing a more ergonomically sound cushion floor that absorbs impact and contributing to better indoor air quality. Additionally, the closed-cell cushion allows Powerbond to be a medium for innovative design with the easy installation of inlays and borders that can be molecularly bonded to maintain moisture impermeability.
