Essential habitech
Sonance Deals a Royal flush For the first time a full range, flush-fitting speaker system will achieve perfect coordination with down-lights round or square. Habitech’s Giovanni Scatola explores the possibilities...
Among the big Dana Innovations launches at CEDIA this year was the Sonance DOS. The Discreet Opening System is a deceptively ordinary name for an extraordinary idea. It may possess all the ‘says on a tin’ flavour of a Ronseal debut, but it’s designed to make the qualities of bespoke installation easier to reproduce.
With extraordinary powers of concealment the Sonance DOS proved to be a big hit with the design community at Decorex.
Totally unique, the system’s AS38 speakers are the world’s first 4in, completely flush mounted ceiling models. Designed to blend with round or square down lighters, they are an interior designer’s dream and a great weapon in the CI’s armoury. No surprise then that a product acknowledged by the CI fraternity with three CEDIA show awards, including CEDIA ‘Product of the Year’ Award, CE Pro ‘Best of Show’ Award and a Technology Integrator EXCITE Award was, within a week, wowing the design crowd at Decorex. In appealing to both sides of the same equation, the Sonance DOS has the power to generate lucrative new partnerships between professionals working in the same space. I’d call that a breakthrough!
precision, achieving a bespoke union of sound, light and surface with repeatable quality. The system features a 4in (102mm) round or square grille that exactly matches the footprint of trim-less light fittings to achieve continuous uninterrupted sight lines (we’ve checked the market and all the fittings we could find conformed to the 100mm - 102mm dimension). It utilises four AS38RS two-way speakers combined with either one or two BPS6 bandpass subwoofers. Satellites and subwoofer adopt the same grille size and shape for aesthetic consistency, while the configuration delivers greater audio consistency and superior tonality throughout the space. The genius of the DOS is that this unique form-factor is
A flawless match with down-lights The DOS is a brilliant evolution of the Sonance Architectural Series - still the only truly flush in-wall/ceiling speaker range. Inspired by Trufig, which is Dana Innovations’ game-changing drive to deliver a flawless blend of product and décor, the Sonance DOS takes the ‘art of flush’ to the nth degree of

Essential habitech coupled to an innovative mounting platform, which provides far greater positioning flexibility, allowing more accurate alignment and spacing with down-light fittings and other ceiling fixtures. The Trufig-influenced platforms comprise a gypsum or solid surface former with integral speaker bracket accommodating protective pop-out plates to make sanding and painting easy for a seamless result. They deliver a highquality, repeatable installation process in drywall, plaster, wood and other solid surfaces, while the magnetic precision grille levelling system ensures a simple and perfectly-flush grille installation every time.
Scalable sound quality
The DOS system provides ultra-discrete full range sound quality
A flush and trim-less DOS aesthetic is also available for a larger 6.5in pivoting two-way speaker, the AS68RS, designed for higher ceiling installations or for very high volume levels in concert with the BPS8 bandpass subwoofer. Both the AS38RS and AS68RS are built using cutting-edge technology and state-of-the-art materials. They feature a ceramic dome tweeter and high-excursion carbon fibre and Rohacell laminated woofer for natural accurate sound and minimal distortion across all listening levels. The BPS6 and BPS8 utilise a high excursion, dual-voice coil, carbon fibre and Rohacell laminated driver for deep, dynamic bass augmentation.
Flush with opportunities Full range performance is only one of a magical mix of virtues that makes the Sonance DOS truly outstanding. It’s easier to install and no more expensive than the existing Sonance Architectural Series, which means you’ll grow the bottom line as much as you would selling five pairs of normal speakers. Not only will you generate more margin from every project, you’ll have more business to transact. This is because the DOS has the quality to attract both designers of systems and designers of rooms, drawing these traditionally estranged communities into the same profitable conversation. Our experience at Decorex confirmed that the design audience couldn’t give two hoots about the nature of in-ceiling speakers, but when their customers are demanding the seamless integration of AV with décor, they’ll drop their The compact AS38RS features the latest Sonance audio design technology
Mulberrys to see the speakers disappear altogether. These exceptional qualities of concealment will allow you to share the same objectives and many mutually profitable sales opportunities with the design community. Ultimately it’s the home owner’s willingness to pay a premium for a flawless result that sustains their businesses and will stimulate yours. After all when the very best down-lights are 700 bucks a piece, you can charge a little extra to match them perfectly.
