Frequently Asked Questions How will I know what sorority is right for me? Each chapter on Kent’s campus has its own unique values, principles, motto and creed that it lives by. In order to find what chapter fits perfect for you, you should participate in Formal Recuitment where you will have the opportunity to meet women from each chapter on campus. The recruitment process will allow for you to discover the best fit! I’m not a freshman. Do I Have to go through recruitment? At some campuses recruitment is for freshman only, but at Kent State University we encourage all undergraduate Kent State students to attend our recruitment events and to register. What is the new member process like? As a new member of a sorority, you will have 6-12 weeks of education before your membership initiation ceremony. This period of education is designed to adjust you with your new sorority sisters, as well as the history and traditions of your sorority. New Member Education can include programs like leadership retreats, community service projects, weekly meetings, and activities designed to build friendships among members of the organization. All fraternities and sororities prohibit hazing and all chapters are committed to a membership education period which instills a sense of responsibility and commitment in the new members. How hard is it to balance sorority life and academics? Everyone is different with time management. We encourage you to ask sorority members how they balance their time and what the time commitment is! Most sorority members are able to manage sorority responsibilities, academics, work and involvement in extra-curricular activities. I am registering for Formal Recruitment! What is the next step? Great! Your assigned Sorority Recruitment Counselor(s) will be in contact with you to help you through the process and to answer any questions. They will share information including important dates and what to wear during each round of recruitment. Connect with Kent State Recruitment through our social media outlets to stay up-to-date on Formal Recruitment 2014!
Four Pillars of Greek Life 1
LEADERSHIP
Each sorority is dedicated to building future leaders by providing a wealth of leadership opportunities, such as leadership training and offering a multitude of chapter officer positions. Greek life is also a springboard to campus involvement such as Undergraduate Student Government, pre-professional organizations and many others. Involvement and leadership provides a well-rounded college experience, which is appealing to potential employers.
2 SISTERHOOD
Once of the most enjoyable and fundamental principles of joining a sorority is making new friends and forming bonds that will last a lifetime. Each chapter has opportunities to strengthen those connections through chapter retreats and campus-wide events such as Homecoming and Greek Week.
3
SCHOLARSHIP
Academic excellence is not only a core value at Kent State University, but is a core value of each sorority. Members are encouraged to strive for excellence through participating in study tables, incentive programs, academic challenges and Study-a-Thon. Each sorority has a minimum grade requirement for joining. The All-Sorority GPA continues to remain significantly above the All-Women’s Kent State GPA.
4 PHILANTHROPY & SERVICE
The Greek community’s interests go beyond the confines of campus life. Sororities sponsor a multitude of activities each year to impact the local community and to raise money for their philanthropies. Sororities and fraternities collaborate with one another during philanthropy events such as Songfest. During the 2013-14 academic year, the Greek community raised over $150,000.
