What is Demography? n 

Demos means people and Graphy means the branch of knowledge relating to a particular discipline (in this instance, population)

Demography is defined as “the study of populations, especially with reference to size and density, fertility, mortality, growth, age distribution, migration, and vital statistics and the integration of these with social and economic conditions” (Last 1995).

Importance of Demography n 

Population affects nearly every aspect of our social lives: economic condition, the quality of our environment and political affairs

Importance of Demography n 

The most obvious use of demography in business is the identification of shifts in the size, structure and distribution of population that will have an effect on the level of demand for the goods or services provided by that business

Importance of Demography Demographics of the workforce have important long-term implications for benefits, productivity, and business profitability n  Management specialists study effects of changing demographic structure on the availability of personnel for performing various jobs. n 

Importance of Demography Federal and state law-makers need demographic information for budget allocations for social programs n  Health officials need population based public health and related demographic data n

Migration as an example of demographic importance Migration changes total number at origin and destination n  It affects composition of age, sex, race, ethnicity, religion at destination n  It also changes social structure, economic status and language spoken n 

Types of Demographic Data Total population n  Population by age, sex, race and ethnicity n  Population by social characteristics such as education, marital status, place of birth, language spoken at home, disability, etc. n 

Demographic Data Collection Methods Census (total population, population by demographic characteristics) n  Demographic Survey (population distribution by characteristics) n  Vital registration (births, deaths, marriages, divorces, etc.) n

Steps to ACS Data Steps: n  1. Click on facfinder2.census.gov n  2. Click on Advanced Search n  3. Click on Show Me All n  4. Click on Geographies n  5. Select a geographic type n  6. Click on County

If you need to have a new run click on “Back to Advanced Search” and then click on “X” to clear your previous selection. Repeat the steps starting from step #2.
