U9 Development Philosophy US Soccer Coaching Curriculum – Basic Stage
Players will have the ability to control and manipulate a soccer ball
Develop the player’s “touch,” performing complex/dynamic moves, foot‐skills, and foot movements as well as improving their overall balance, coordination and foot‐speed
Work on going around defenders, feinting to make the defender off‐balanced and to accelerate into the big space
Dribbling, Passing, Shooting, Receiving techniques
We teach the game as a WHOLE. (just in smaller numbers) – 1v1, 2v1, 2v2, 3v2, 4v4, 6v6, 7v7
Small sided tactics. However – emphasis on individual player development
Basic state of soccer’s focus is on developing technically proficient players who over time, begin to develop into decision makers on the field
U9 Development Philosophy
Teach numbering system for shape and styles so kids understand roles of #’s- 1-2-3-1 Formation
Work on playing out of pressure (with a defender on their backs), shielding the ball, receiving and turning, finishing, as well as basic defending principals
U9 Development Philosophy
Positions and shape, and will also be encouraged to find space on the field, rotate and find new space on the field or adjust as play develops, and be fearless and creative going 1v1
Fundamentals and ideas of soccer, that will be the foundation for the remaining years
Goalkeepers rotate
