Game 2: USD at Bowling Green

1

Bob Nielson has begun his 25th season as a head coach and his second with the Coyotes. He stands nine wins shy of 200 for his career. USD is the sixth program Nielson has served as head coach at. He has taken four of the previous five programs to the playoffs within his first four years and captured NCAA Division II national championships with Minnesota Duluth in 2008 and 2010. Nielson is a three-time national coach of the year and the 2015 MVFC Coach of the Year.

2

Pass game coordinator Ted Schlafke (starting quarterback) and co-defensive coordinator Tyler Yelk (starting safety) won a NCAA Division II national championship under Nielson at Minnesota Duluth in 2008 (15-0).

3

South Dakota is taking on an FBS program for the 10th time in the last eight seasons. A look at how the Coyotes have fared in those games follows: Sept. 4, 2010: Central Florida 38, USD 7 Sept. 11, 2010: USD 41, Minnesota 38 Sept. 3, 2011: Air Force 37, USD 20 Sept. 24, 2011 Wisconsin 59, USD 10 Sept. 22, 2012 Northwestern 38, USD 7 Sept. 7, 2013: Kansas 31, USD 14 Aug. 31, 2014: Oregon 62, USD 13 Sept. 5, 2015: Kansas State 34, USD 0 Sept. 1, 2016: New Mexico 48, USD 21

4

South Dakota’s offense scored touchdowns on seven of its eight first-half possessions in building a 56-7 halftime lead against Drake last weekend. The Coyotes totaled 400 yards of offense in 55 plays during the first half.

5

Defensively, the Coyotes used an FCS best six sacks en route to holding Drake to minus-7 yards rushing. The six sacks accounted for 40 yards. Without the sacks, Drake carried 28 times for 33 yards. The focus since the end of last season has been improving a unit that allowed 250 yards rushing per game last season. To that end, the Coyotes brought in eight true freshmen defensive linemen on Signing Day, moved end Jake Leohr to defensive tackle, and welcomed back starting middle linebacker John Wessel, a captain who missed all but three plays of 2016 due to injury. Leohr did not play against Drake due to injury. True freshman Nathan Schultz earned the start in his place.

6

Redshirt freshman Brady Schutt and Kansas transfer Ryan Weese won the competitions for punter and placekicker, respectively. They are filling the shoes left by AllAmerican Miles Bergner, who handled both roles for four years.

Outside of junior Michael Fredrick, no other running back had attempted a carry in a Coyote uniform entering opening weekend. Against Drake, Fredrick, redshirt freshman Ben Klett and true freshman Kai Henry combined for 171 yards on 36 carries. Each ran for a score and carried between 11-13 times.

8

South Dakota returned six of its top seven wide receivers and both tight ends to the passing game this season. You can add redshirt freshman Levi Falck and true freshman Kody Case to the mix. Falck started against Drake and caught three passes for 39 yards. Case caught three passes for 40 yards and a score. Ten different Coyotes caught passes during the game with senior Alonge Brooks leading with four catches, 50 yards and two touchdowns. Nine Coyotes caught double-digit passes during the 2016 season.

9

Redshirt freshman Mason Scheidegger is one of two new starters on the offensive line. At right guard is Cody Jennings, a junior transfer from Kismet, Kansas, who led Garden City Community College (Kan.) to a national championship last season. Nick Jensen has started every game for the last two-plus years at left tackle. Stetson Dagel (LG) and Tanner Anderson (RT) are both returning starters from 2016.

10

South Dakota’s starting linebackers and secondary were all upperclassmen against Drake, but it was the youngsters who stole the headlines. Redshirt freshman cornerback Mark Collins Jr. intercepted a pass on the second snap of his collegiate career. Redshirt freshman safety Phillip Powell intercepted two passes including one he returned nine yards for a touchdown. Powell had five solo tackles for the game, four of which came while covering kickoffs.

11

Sophomore defensive ends Darin Greenfield and Kameron Cline earned their first collegiate starts Saturday. Greenfield’s 5.5 TFL are the most by a Coyote since the NCAA began tracking the stat in 2000. Last year, the duo combined for six sacks and 10 TFL while rotating in.

SOUTH DAKOTA

THIS WEEK’S NOTES

12

The Coyotes’ no-huddle, up-tempo offense created 19 touchdown drives of less than two minutes last year. Three other quick drives ended with field goals. Six of USD’s 10 touchdown drives against Drake were less than two minutes.

13

Chris Streveler was a wide receiver at Minnesota before transferring to USD. In 11 starts at quarterback for South Dakota, he has accounted for 37 touchdowns (27 passing, 10 rushing). Last year, he finished fourth in the nation in points responsible for per game (18.6). Streveler was the Valley’s fourth-leading rusher and sixth-leading passer in terms of yards per game. He has thrown a touchdown pass in all 11 games as a Yote and has rushed for a score in eight of 11.

14

A pair of senior veterans in Aaron Ramsey and Josh Hale join redshirt freshman Brett Samson on the two-deep at tight end. Each can lineup in the backfield, in the slot or on the end of the line in USD’s up-tempo attack. Hale, who caught one pass last season, caught a 3-yard touchdown against Drake last weekend. It was his first touchdown grab since his freshman season in 2014.

15

Ray Dixon is a senior transfer from the University of Minnesota where Streveler began his collegiate career. Against Drake, Dixon rotated in at linebacker and, on passing downs, at defensive end. He also competed on special teams.

16

A note on South Dakota’s two-deep. Of the 45 offensive and defensive players listed, 21 are in either their first or second season with the team. In fact, of the 109 players on the Coyotes’ roster, two-thirds (73) are in year one or year two in Vermillion.

17

Junior Paul Anderson has been the Yotes’ return man in each of the last two-plus seasons. He has averaged 21.8 yards per kickoff return with a long of 52 for his career, and 5.6 yards on 22 career punt returns with a long of 35. The Coyotes had 25 punt return yards all of last season. Against Drake, Anderson, Kody Case and Trystn Ducker combined for 43 yards on five returns.

18

South Dakota is the only team with two quarterbacks who have won games in the Valley. Austin Simmons passed for 205 yards and two scores in a win against two-time defending Valley co-champion Illinois State last season. Simmons is a capable backup who competed in seven games as a redshirt freshman last season. He played all but one series of the second half against Drake, passing for 33 yards and a score and rushing six times for 57 yards including a 43-yard scramble.

19

To be the best, you have to beat the best. The Coyotes have faced no fewer than five nationally-ranked FCS teams in each of their five seasons in the MVFC (since 2012). Not included in those numbers are five games against FBS foes. That means 33 of 58 games (57 percent) over the last five-plus years have been against either an FBS team or a nationallyranked FCS foe.

20

Yes, Andrew Gray and Alex Gray are twin brothers. Andrew (safety) had 56 tackles and two interceptions last year. Alex (linebacker) had 53 tackles and two picks.

21

Last year’s Coyote team was the first in program history to score at least 20 points in every game. South Dakota has averaged 33 points in 12 games under coach Bob Nielson and coordinators Ted Schlafke and Bill O’Boyle.

HEAD COACH BOB NIELSON

Head Coach Bob Nielson

Bob Nielson was introduced as the 30th head coach in the history of University of South Dakota football in December of 2015. It is the sixth head coaching stint for Nielson, who has enjoyed success at nearly every level of college football. He is a three-time national coach of the year recipient, a two-time national champion head coach, and was Missouri Valley Football Conference Coach of the Year in 2016. The 2017 season is the 25th for Nielson as a head coach.

Nielson has been labeled a builder throughout his career and his resume supports the description. He has compiled a 190-87-1 record in 24 seasons as a head coach for six different programs. He has taken four of those programs to the playoffs within his first four years, and captured NCAA Division II national championships with Minnesota Duluth in 2008 and 2010.

Most recently, Nielson served as head coach at Western Illinois University in Macomb for three seasons from 2013-15. He led the Leathernecks to a 7-6 record in 2015 and to the second round of the FCS playoffs. It was the first playoff appearance for the Leathernecks since 2010. Nielson grew up in Marion, Iowa, and received his bachelor’s degree from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, in 1982. He began his career as an offensive line coach at his alma mater before being promoted to defensive coordinator in 1987. Ripon College in Wisconsin gave Nielson his first head coaching gig. He was 2-6-1 in his first season and improved to 7-2 in year two. It was the first season the Red Hawks had posted more than four victories in eight years. Nielson returned to Waverly in 1991 to serve as head coach of the Knights. In 1993, his third season, Wartburg won an Iowa Conference title, Nielson earned his first conference coach of the year award, and the Knights returned to the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time in 11 years. One year later, Wartburg had its first NCAA playoff victory. Nielson’s Duluth Dynasty began in 1999. In year three, Duluth made its first postseason appearance by competing in the Mineral Water Bowl in Missouri. The following season, the Bulldogs won the 2002 Northern Sun Championship with a 9-0 record and qualified for the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time. Duluth was 38-19 in its first five years under Nielson, who turned in his whistle after the 2003 season to serve as the Bulldogs’ athletic director. He remained the AD when he returned to coach the football team in 2008. That year, Duluth earned its first national championship with a 15-0 record. The Bulldogs duplicated the feat in 2010. Nielson was 100-26 in 10 seasons at Duluth. In his second five-year stint, the program was 62-7 with five NCAA playoff appearances, four NSIC titles and two undefeated seasons. Nielson was named national coach of the year in both championship years and totaled three Northern Sun Coach of the Year awards. Nielson joined the FCS ranks in 2013 when he made the move to Macomb. The Leathernecks combined for five wins from 2011-12, but progressed to four, five and seven wins in three seasons under Nielson. The Leathernecks featured seven all-MVFC honorees including four in 2015. Nielson and his wife, Terri, have two daughters, Amanda Taylor and Kasey King, a son, Kyle, and three grandchildren, Cash, Rowan, and Finley. Nielson holds a master’s degree from University of Northern Iowa, which he completed in 1988.
