A STRONG START TO THE SEASON The Owls started their season with a 2-0 mark at the Franklin Pierce Classic. On Friday, SCSU defeated Felician, 6-1 and took Saturday’s game against Queens, 2-0.

IMMEDIATE IMPACT ON THE TEAM Freshman Sarah Sheehan acquired five points and junior Flavia Bernardes tallied six points in this past weekend’s tournament at Franklin Pierce. In the win against Felician, Sheehan netted two goals and assisted on another. Bernardes contributed two assists and a goal of her own. On Saturday, Bernardes tacked on an insurance goal in the 2-0 win over Queens off a penalty kick in the 29th minute of the game.

CLEAN SLATE IN THE GOAL Olivia Heffernan has been sharp in goal to start the season, including her first shutout of the year. She collected one save in 45 minutes against Felician and accumulated five saves in the full 90 minutes of play against Queens. Heffernan set the tempo of the game versus Queens by saving a goal off a penalty kick in only the 4th minute of play.

LEADING THE TEAM Head coach Adam Cohen has announced that senior Lindsay Stanton and juniors Michelle Desmarais and Alison Ditolla will serve as team captains for the Owls this year. All three have been recognized as Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll selections for their academic work over the course of their collegiate careers.

IN THE NORTHEAST-10 PRESEASON POLL Southern Connecticut was picked seventh in the league’s preseason poll and secured one first-place vote in a poll of Northeast-10 coaches.
THREE NAMED TO NEWISA SENIOR BOWL Seniors Erin Conrod, Ashley Knight and Gina DellaRose were named to the NEWISA Senior Bowl following the conclusion of the 2009 season.
NEWCOMERS LOOKING TO MAKE AN IMPACT The Owls are looking forward to the contribution of 12 new student-athletes - LeAnn DiSisto, Suzane Pires, Alexandra Revoir, Flavia Bernardes, Laura Barberia, Jenna Maisto, Sarah Sheehan, Sarah Brochu, Jacquelyn Fede, Alycia Cartica, Kayla Tamayo and Alexis Vumbaco.
NO STRANGERS TO EXTRA TIME The Owls played seven overtime contests during the course of the 2009 season and posted a 4-2-1 mark in games that required extra time.
LOOKING BACK AT 2009 The Southern Connecticut State University women’s soccer team capped off the 2009 season with an overall mark of 8-9-1. The Owls were regionally ranked for most of the campaign.
ON DECK The Owls will host Assumption on September 15, then travel to Saint Michael’s to challenge the Purple Knights on September 18.
KNIGHT FINISHED ON A HIGH NOTE Ashley Knight capped her career as a four-time All-Conference performer, as she was once again honored by the Northeast-10 for her play during the 2009 season. DUO COLLECTS LEAGUE, NEW ENGLAND HONORS Seniors Ashley Knight and Gina DellaRose both earned AllConference and All-New England laurels for their play in 2009. OWLS THRIVE INDIVIDUALLY IN THE CLASSROOM Eighteen members of the 2009 squad were named to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll for their efforts in the classroom during the 2009-10 academic year. SUCCESS AS A TEAM AS WELL The Owls were also recognized with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Academic Team Award for posting a cumulative team grade point average of greater than 3.0.
