COACHES
Head Coach
Todd Simon THIRD SEASON 22-47 Overall, 8-28 Big Sky
At the start of the 2018-19 season Todd Simon will be in his third year at the helm of the Southern Utah University men’s basketball team after being named the head coach on March 24, 2016. In his second year with the team the Thunderbirds won 13 contests in 2017-18, and made it to the semifinals of the Big Sky Conference Championship Tournament for the first time in the history of the program. The 13 wins the program reached more than doubled the win total of the team Simon inherited. In 2017-18 the Thunderbirds finished 9-5 at home. They beat a team from the Mountain West Conference for the first time since 2006 and a team from the West Coast Conference since the turn of the century. The Thunderbirds finished non-conference play 6-5, marking the first time the team had finished above .500 outside of league play since the 2006-07 season. In his first year with the program Simon led the Thunderbirds to a first-round win at the Big Sky Road to Reno Conference Tournament with a triple overtime victory over Montana State. The Thunderbirds concluded the season with a 6-27 overall record and a 3-15 conference record. Simon was named interim head coach of the UNLV men’s basketball program in January 2016 and immediately led them to three consecutive victories. During Simon’s 17 games, the Runnin’ Rebels ranked as the number one team in the nation in adjusted tempo, scoring more than 100 points in four games. UNLV finished with a 9-8 record, despite playing with as few as five scholarship players. Prior to being named interim head coach, Simon was in his third year as associate head coach with UNLV and had a critical role in assembling UNLV’s roster, which Rivals.com ranked its 2014 recruiting class #5 in the nation, while the 2015 class was ranked #11. Prior to his tenure as a Runnin’ Rebel, Simon served Findlay Prep for seven years in both head and assistant coaching roles. As head coach at Findlay Prep in 2012-2013, he led the team to a 35-1 record, including eight wins over top-25 ranked teams. The 35 victories are the most wins in school history. During Simon’s tenure at Findlay Prep, they accumulated an overall record of 192-9. During his career Simon has helped develop and coach several players that have become top NBA draft picks, including Anthony Bennett, who was selected as the top overall pick in 2013, Rashad Vaughn, who was picked No. 17 in 2015, and Avery Bradley. Other NBA player’s Simon has coached in his career include Christian Wood, Jorge Gutierrez, Cory Joseph, DeAndre Liggins, Nick Johnson and Tristan Thompson. A native of Fowler, Michigan, Simon earned his bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan with a double major in sport studies and management information systems in 2003. He earned his master’s degree from UNLV in sport education leadership in 2010. Todd and his wife, Kati, have three sons and one daughter: Rece, Raylan, Ryder and Sophia.

GAME RECAPS SUU 109, West Coast Baptist 63
SUU 66, San Jose State 59
CEDAR CITY, Utah -- The Thunderbird men’s basketball team secured a win in their regular season opener on Tuesday night, knocking off the West Coast Baptist College Eagles 109-63 behind 28 assists on 43 made field goals.
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The Thunderbird men’s basketball team knocked off San Jose State out of the Mountain West Conference on Saturday night, outpacing the Spartans 66-59.
“It was a good night for us in terms of how we’re trying to establish our culture and how we want to play,” SUU head coach Todd Simon said. “The 28 assists was a big deal for us on 43 field goals, and we forced 29 turnovers. We’re trying to force tempo, create a little chaos out there and the guys did a good job doing that.” Dwayne Morgan led the Thunderbirds in scoring, dropping in 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Cameron Oluyitan had 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field for the T-Birds as well. Freshmen Maizen Fausett and Harrison Butler both scored in double-figures for the T-Birds, scoring 16 and 15 respectively. Brandon Better was the fifth T-Bird to score in the double-digits, dropping in 11 points of three-of-five shooting from behind the three-point line.
“It was our first road game of the year and we needed to grind it out,” SUU head coach Todd Simon said. “It was a game where we weren’t making shots, not making free throws and we had a lot of guys in foul trouble early. But we were able to defend, rebound and take care of the ball which gave us a chance to win.” Cameron Oluyitan led the Thunderbirds with 15 points on 7-of-16 shooting. Dwayne Morgan was the only other T-Bird in double-digits with 13 points, finishing four-of-six from the free throw line. The Thunderbirds outrebounded the Spartans 4534, and finished the game with 13 assists. SUU also forced the Spartans into 19 turnovers.

GAME RECAPS SUU 73, Seattle 70
SEATTLE, Wash. -- The Thunderbird men’s basketball team invaded the Redhawk Center and knocked off Seattle University 73-70 on Sunday afternoon. Southern Utah has improved to 3-0 on the season, marking the first time since the team’s transition to Division I men’s basketball that they have won their first three regular season contests. “Any time you can win on the road it’s gratifying, and the guys kind of controlled the game from wire-towire which was a credit to their physical and mental toughness,” SUU head coach Todd Simon said.
UNLV 76, SUU 71
LAS VEGAS -- The Thunderbird men’s basketball team squared off against the Runnin’ Rebels of UNLV on Friday night inside the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, and ultimately fell 76-71 in tightly played contest. The Thunderbirds moved to 3-1 on the season after the loss, following the best start in school history. Calloway led the T-Birds in scoring with 14 points on three-of-four shooting from behind the threepoint line.
The Redhawks, who compete in the WAC, were coming off a victory over Washington State out of the Pac-12 and had only lost on the road to Stanford, as the T-Birds handed them their first home loss of the season.
“Jacob is a guy that can stretch a defense and is a high IQ guy,” Simon said. “We tried to get him the ball and make them make adjustments. He did a really good job and that’s what we’ve come to expect from him.”
Oluyitan and Andre Adams finished as the team’s leading scorers, both dropping in 15 points for the T-Birds.
Dwayne Morgan finished with 12 for SUU, and Richardson had 10.
“They played tough,” Simon said. “They were getting in the paint, they were on attack and between the two of them they got eight free throws up.”
Adams was the team’s leading rebounder with eight, also finishing with nine points.
