Safety and Public Awareness (SPA) Committee FY-2017 Work Plan (Updated August 2017) Background. ATSSA’s policy of “Toward Zero Deaths” includes recommendations to help make America’s roadways safer with a vision “to annually reduce roadway fatalities until we reach the goal of Zero Deaths on America’s roadways.” Many of the safety recommendations submitted by ATSSA members have been included in the nation’s transportation bill, but work must continue. Some of the SPA Committee’s activities (below) shall continue in 2017 and beyond to assist ATSSA in accomplishing its strategic goals. SPA Committee Activities for 2017 may include: 1. The development of roadway safety deliverables as “leave behinds” for identified target audiences (hi-visibility apparel guide, cone-setting guide, etc.) including transportation officials, law enforcement and EMS officials, schools and other interested stakeholders. 2. Promote the importance of continually rebuilding and maintaining the nation’s transportation infrastructure, specifically roadways and bridges. 3. Continue to partner with other individuals, agencies and organizations whose interest is roadway safety. 4. Encourage other ATSSA members to meet with local officials, including state DOT personnel, key SHSP decision makers, county engineers, public works directors, emergency responders and law enforcement officers. Discuss with them key roadway safety solutions using the tools created by ATSSA (case study booklets) and by deliverables created in the SPA Committee. Strategies. 1.

Keep the ATSSA membership informed of the SPA Committee’s activities including ATSSA Chapters and technical committees as well as other roadway safety organizations and government agencies through articles in The Signal.

2. Seek opportunities for new challenges, specifically innovation and technology (Goal E, ATSSA’s Strategic Plan), ways to improve our aging infrastructure with low-cost roadway safety improvements, and help ensure our road workers are trained, certified and safe. Additionally, help educate the public regarding the extent and severity of roadway safety issues – including officials at the local, state and federal levels – and stress the importance and need for safer roads. 3. The SPA Committee will work together – and with other like -minded partners – to continue to develop informative and effective roadway safety information and materials to be delivered strategically to designated audiences. Review of the Work Plan. The SPA Committee Work Plan reviewed and accepted the committee work plan during the 2017 Annual Convention meeting in Phoenix, Arizona. The work plan reviewed, updated if necessary, and approved by the committee during the 2017 ATSSA Midyear Meeting in Louisville, Ky. //SIGNED// Kathi Holst Chair Safety and Public Awareness Committee
