68 Spatial Tool for Plume Visualization and Data Management Paul Fuellbrandt, ATCO Electric The number of data points collected at a contaminated site can range from under a hundred into the thousands. Understanding what that data means and what management approach is required by a specific situation quickly becomes difficult to manage manually. In the end, site management decisions are made based on the intuitions and hunches of the scientific professionals (consultant, client and regulators) responsible for the site. There is a need for a scientific and statistically reproducible method for making these decisions and the tool this presentation discusses will make that possible. The tool is spatially-based and can instantly interpolate between measured data points to create a visualization of a plume. The interpolation is done via statistical modeling, lending scientific credibility to the output. This gives executive teams and regulators confidence in the recommendations that we, as scientific professionals, make. One obvious application is during spill response to give a real time picture of the extent of a plume that is easily understood by everyone from senior scientists to decision-makers with no scientific background. As data is received from an analytical laboratory it can be instantly added to the dataset and visualized. This allows better decisions to be made about how to effectively manage the plume.

Paul Fuellbrandt Paul is both a Professional Agrologist and a Project Management Professional. Over that last 15 plus years he has cultivated an increasing specialization in developing and executing attainable closure plans for contaminated sites. The motivation for his work has been drawn from a desire to return as much land as possible to productive use. That theme has been developed through a broad range of experience spanning the consulting, private industry, analytical laboratory and regulatory sectors including overseeing the Remediation Certificate Program for Alberta Environment and Parks.
