The Creative Brief In 2017, the Fringe is celebrating its 70th anniversary. The Fringe began when eight theatre groups turned up uninvited to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival. Not being asked to take part or having a slot to perform, didn’t stop these artists from being brave enough to express themselves and they went ahead and staged their shows on the ‘Fringe of the Festival’ anyway. This is where our name comes from, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Seventy years later, the Fringe still defies the norm and thousands of performers and audience members travel from around the world to the cobbled streets of Edinburgh to showcase their talent and share their skills in a supportive environment. The official Fringe Programme is a free guide to what’s on at the Fringe and is an indispensable resource to our audience. It’s important that the front cover encapsulates the spirit of the Fringe!
