FALL 2014 – SPECIAL 75TH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE
MAC Newsletter Alpha Omicron Pi – Montreal Alumnae Chapter
President’s Message Dear Sisters, I am writing to you with great anticipation, as MAC will host Kappa Phi’s 75th anniversary celebrations in just a few short days. And what a celebration it will be! Over one hundred women from across North America and Europe will join us over the course of the weekend, a testament to the incredible bond of sisterhood that is AOII. In its 75-year history, Kappa Phi has enhanced the university careers of nearly six hundred McGill women. But as we all know, AOII extends beyond the University years, beyond the University walls. AOII is truly for a lifetime. The 75th is a wonderful opportunity not only for alumnae to reconnect with sisters and to meet new ones, but also for MAC to reach out to potential new members, including sisters we have not seen in a while, as well as recent or soon-to-be McGill grads. This year’s MAC exec has put a lot of effort into planning events that you are sure to enjoy, and our past two events suggest that we’ve succeeded in doing just that: 15 women attended a wonderful wineand-cheese kick-off hosted by Sandy at the end of August, while over 30 collegiates, alumnae, and friends attended an AOII Family Day BBQ in the Park in early September.

Take a look at our calendar (p. 2) and try out a MAC event! And be sure to put yourself on our mailing list (p. 6). We hope that the 75th helps to remind you of all the great times you’ve had with AOII over the years. Now, it’s time to build some new AOII memories by joining your local alumnae chapter today! What have MAC members been up to this year? They joined the AOII Family… Last March, Francine Lapointe initiated as an AOII, and she has been a fantastic addition to the MAC family!
They extended their families… Leslie Sponder and Tara Taylor both gave birth to healthy baby boys. Sandrine Simard, Caitlin Taal, Tara Taylor, and Alexandra LaRue got married. Katarina Daniels got engaged.
They travelled… Caitlin Taal went to Hawaii for her honeymoon, while Sandrine Simard went to California and Bora Bora for hers. Joan MacCallum and Francine Lapointe spent time in Nova Scotia, playing golf and visiting a vineyard. Leslie Sponder attended an AOII wedding in BC.
Katarina Daniels took a summer course in China, travelled to Chicago to visit three AOIIs, went back to Asia (this time Hong Kong and Malaysia), and recently returned from Niagara Falls, where she celebrated the Bachelorette Party of an AOII. Kathleen Morrison ate at the same restaurant as Barack Obama in Martha’s Vineyard… only a few days later! 3

… a lot! Beryl Ball spent some time in Bermuda, housesitting as well as pet-sitting two cats, a dog, and a goat! Wendy Moon Bolyn saw 11 plays on Broadway, while traveling to New York City for work over 20 times. Laurie Deakin spent Christmas with Mickey Mouse as well as Neil Patrick Harris at Walt Disney World. Sandra Keymer and her husband Ian just came back from a re-positioning cruise from Hamburg, Germany to Norway (meeting an old friend from Expo 67!), Shetland, Faroe Islands and Iceland – where they enjoyed swimming in “the Blue Lagoon”. They were disappointed that weather and waves prevented them from entering the harbour at St. John’s, NFLD.
They did some sports for a good cause… Siobhan O’Brien participated in the Ride to Conquer Cancer with two AOII sisters, Sarah Jones and Alexandra LaRue, and also walked in the Weekend to End Cancer. Karen Hall Moon was Ambassador for Team Canada at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts curling event.
And more! Sandra Keymer graduated in May, after 4 years study, with an EFM (Education for Ministry) diploma from the University of Sewanee, Georgia. In November, Sandy will be commissioned as a Diocesan Lay Reader in the Anglican Diocese of Montreal. Sandy just turned the same age as Kappa Phi! Pamela Glowacki expanded her horizons by joining AOIIs new Training Ambassador program. Francine Lapointe was present at the delivery of her granddaughter. 4

Kappa Phi’s 75th Anniversary In the late 1930s, Natalie Thompson Morris of Epsilon Chapter (author of the Epsilon Chapter Song) brought together a group of young women, including her daughter, and began Kappa Phi. It was installed in 1939 by Anne Jeter Nichols Ribble. Since then, nearly 600 McGill women have benefited from the unique bond of sisterhood that we have all experienced in Kappa Phi.
causes through fun and creative fundraisers, and continues to espouse AOII values across campus and around the World. As we celebrate 75 years of Kappa Phi, I encourage you to not only reconnect with your class sisters, but also to meet the incredible women that make up Kappa Phi today. Over 100 women from all generations of Kappa Phi will be in attendance during the course of the weekend; be sure to mix and mingle, and find out what makes AOII so special to each of us. As well, be sure to meet our international representatives, Amber Countis and Koren Phillips, who will be with us all weekend.
The 75th anniversary is a time to celebrate 75 years since our founding, but also 25 years since our re-chartering. Today, Kappa Phi counts nearly 60 talented, worldly, and diverse women. The chapter wins Greek Week more than any other Greek organization at McGill, raises money for Arthritis Research among other
Now, go socialize and take some pictures at our photo booth!
A note from Kappa Phi’s AAC Kappa Phi is once again at house total, having welcomed 25 wonderful new members so far this year. The rest of the AAC is composed of: Stephanie Colwell, Pam Glowacki, Sarah Jones, Kate Peer, Leslie Sponder Seagram, Caitlin Taal Boutin, and Julia Weber. Convention 2015: The City of Angels AOII Convention is the exclamation point at the end of each biennium. Since 1908, members and leaders of AOII have gathered together to celebrate the organization's achievements, while planning the direction for the future. This year, we’ll be celebrating AOII in Los Angeles, and, although it’s a far trek, MAC is hoping to send as many AOIIs as we can gather! Between Rituals, motivational speakers, Disneyland, and a whole lot of sisterhood, it will be a Convention to remember!!
Be sure to join us in L.A.!
MAC’s Online Presence: Facebook & Website In case you weren’t aware, MAC is online! We have a private MAC Facebook Page with 40 members, and this is closed to MAC members and Kappa Phi alumnae. Please feel free to post ride shares, events of interest, and any ideas in the Facebook group here: http://www.facebook.com/groups/aoiimontreal/. As well, our website is constantly being updated. Please send news and pictures to share with the chapter to
[email protected]. On the website, you can also check our MAC calendar, old newsletters, and soon, you will even be able to pay your dues (!): http://aoiimontreal.weebly.com/.
Changing your address with AOII Did you receive your To Dragma recently? Every AOII can receive 3 issues per year if: they are paid-up members of any alumnae chapter OR if they are paid-up Life Loyal members OR if they pay for the $25 annual subscription fee. The easiest way is to be a member of an alumnae chapter every year. Another reason you may not have received this outstanding magazine is that Headquarters may not have your current address. To fix that send an email to:
[email protected]. Info to include: your maiden (and married) name, collegiate chapter and graduation date and your full address including CANADA. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask Joan MacCallum.
Changing your address/ contact info with MAC Have you been receiving our e-mails, including ChimpMail Newsletters and Evite invitations? If not, your contact information may be out of date! Simply e-mail
