SPECIALIST CERTIFICATE IN GREEN ROOFS AND WALLS 2016
Entry requirements Entry into the course will be based on completion of: • A bachelor’s degree; OR • A relevant TAFE or Higher Education Advanced Diploma or equivalent and 3 years full-time, documented work experience in horticulture, forestry or a related green industry or equivalent; OR • A relevant TAFE Diploma and 4.5 years full-time, documented work experience in horticulture, forestry or a related green industry or equivalent; OR • 6 years full-time, documented work experience in horticulture, forestry or a related green industry, including at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
The Specialist Certificate in Green Roofs and Walls is a postgraduate coursework program delivered by industry experts and academics. The course utilises Australia’s only dedicated green roofs research and training facility, the Burnley Green Roofs, based at the Burnley campus, Melbourne. The course is unique in Australia and offers the potential for those interested in the green roof and wall ‘movement’ or for those already in the industry to gain a formal qualification in this complex but growing area. It is aimed at professionals in the built environment and landscape sector, those with an interest in horticulture, town planners, designers, landscape architects and others seeking to gain experience and qualifications in green roofs and wall technologies.

Course structure Specialist Certificate in Green Roofs and Walls This course, comprising two subjects both delivered intensively, focuses on you gaining an understanding of green roof and wall design and function, and how to manage and maintain them. Designing Green Roofs and Walls September 25 - 30 This subject explores the design and specificiation of green roofs and walls. Using current research and local and international case studies, we examine different types of green roofs and walls, the requirements for successful design, the development of specifications as well as construction and maintenance requirements. Managing Green Roofs and Walls November 28 - December 2 This subject explores the management and maintenance of green roofs and walls. The content includes guidelines and policies supporting green roofs and walls, maintenance requirements, the development of management plans, and local and international case studies.
Students may be eligible for up to 25 points of credit towards the Master of Urban Horticulture, assuming necessary entry requirements have been met.
Burnley Campus, the University of Melbourne The Specialist Certificate in Green Roofs and Walls is delivered at Burnley Campus, the University of Melbourne and is located at 500 Yarra Boulevard, Richmond. The campus is approximately five kilometres from Melbourne’s city centre, and is easily accessible via public transport. Burnley has an international profile in urban horticulture teaching and through its expanding profile in green infrastructure and urban waterways research. Situated in nine hectares of heritage listed gardens, the campus is home to Burnley Green Roofs, the first dedicated demonstration, training and research facility of its kind in Australia. The campus will be celebrating an important milestone, 125 years of horticultural education in 2016.
