Species of the Day: Solomon Island Palm Frog The Solomon Island Palm Frog, Palmatorappia solomonis, is listed as ‘Vulnerable’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened SpeciesTM. This species inhabits tropical rainforest on several large islands in the Solomon Islands archipelago, which straddles the border between Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands in the Western Pacific. In just the last three decades, the clearance and degradation of forest has left only 25 percent of the region’s lowland forest in a pristine condition, and it is thought that logging might be impacting lowland populations of the Solomon Island Palm Frog. Given the current rate of forest loss within the Solomon Islands, there is an urgent need to improve habitat protection at sites where the Solomon Island Palm Frog occurs. At present, it is not known to inhabit any protected areas within its range.
