Sports 4 Kids Day Once again, Sports for Kids Day was a huge success. The 9th annual event had over 300 kids from across the community. The SAMs mentors were “mother/father ducks”. A few mentors were assigned to a group of children and took them from station to station. Every sports team had a station that was run by members from that team. @SFU_SAMs_SAAC

Swimming had relays that practiced the different types of strokes (on land); cheerleading did different lifts and cartwheels; football ran drills and passed the ball; track had relays on top of the aux gym and hurdles to jump over and under; soccer kicked goals; bowling had plastic bowling pins; tennis had to carry the ball on a racket and weave in and out of cones; lacrosse shot goals; men’s basketball worked on shooting techniques; women’s basketball did dribble knockout; golf had a putting game and a hitting section; and volleyball played a game with beach balls. Thank you to all the sponsors, coaches, and volunteers who helped make this event successful!

Benefits of Yoga With finals approaching, it may be time to train the mind as well as the body. Yoga means to unite; unite the body, mind, and spirit. Yoga is the practice of simple body movements done with mindfulness and attention to achieve the outcomes. Yoga improves strength, balance, stamina, flexibility and relaxation. In addition studies have shown that yoga significantly improves over all cardiovascular endurance, and decreases the volume of oxygen per work unit (you can do more activity using less oxygen). Some other benefits of yoga practice include: decrease in resting heart rate, increase in peak expiratory flow rate, and physiological changes in the body that are similar to individuals who participated in endurance training. Five basic yoga poses for you to start with are: supine big toe, bridge, downward facing dog, seated head to knee, and triangle pose (you can visit http://www.yogajournal.com/ for more poses and information). Yoga is also used in sports medicine practice to help improve musculoskeletal conditions such as: osteoarthritis of the hands, carpal-tunnel syndrome, and chronic low back pain. Yoga can also benefit cardiopulmonary conditions, chronic bronchitis, and asthma. Start training your mind along with your body, do well on finals and get fit for the summer! Raub, James A., M.S. 7.

Sleep!

Now is the time to focus, as these grades reflect the hard work you’ve put in throughout the entire semester. Stop by the Student-Athlete Development Center if you have questions. Good luck on your exams!

Coach of the Month Jennifer Patrick-Swift was selected as April’s Coach of the Month. She has led the softball team to an overall record of 29-13. Best of luck the rest of the season! 1) With a successful season so far, what is the mindset of the team at this point? How you contribute to that mindset? When our team steps out onto the field, we all truly believe that we can, and will, beat the opponent. The girls aren't phased by the name of the school or the name on the front of the other team's jerseys. We are more concerned about ourselves and what we need to do to be successful in our process so that the outcome at the end of the day results in a win. My job is to continue to remind them that we can beat anyone if we play our game and stick to our process. From a preparation perspective in-season, our staff tries to prepare for each game by preparing our hitters for pitchers we may be facing, our pitchers for hitters we will be facing, and our defense for offensive/defensive tendencies we will most likely see from the other teams. Information ahead of time helps our team be more confident going into each game by already knowing and expecting certain things from the opponent. 2) Compared to last year, what are some of the improvements the team has made so far this season?

We are winning the close games and aren't succumbing to the pressure teams may put on us in the later innings. In prior years, we had trouble being consistent with finishing games, where as this year in tight games, they actually talk in the huddles with confidence about "sealing the deal," or finishing. 3) What are your goals for the remainder of the season? The girls have done a great job finding ways to win games. What we did in the win/loss column before conference has no bearing on what the standings will be as conference gets geared up. However, the confidence and knowledge our team has gained playing in some big games early will undoubtedly be a frame of positive reference all throughout conference play.

Congratulations to these SAAC & SAMs Members
