Tony Tarantini and Janet Gates, two of the more than 500 professional and amateur participants expected to compete in this month’s Med Express Mountaineer Triathlon, take their preparations seriously. Said Tarantini: “I have done a lot of races in a lot of different places and this is far and away the most challenging triathlon course of this distance that you are going to find. It is very tough.”

Athletes prepare as Morgantown field doubles DANIELLE E. KOVAL The Dominion Post
The Med Express Mountaineer Triathlon, which will be run in Morgantown June 25, has been selected as an official qualifying race for September’s USA Triathlon HalfMax National Championship race. Because of this, triathlon coordinators are expecting to have more than 500 professional and amateur athletes competing in this year’s event. The increase in participation is more than twice as many athletes as they had last year. This year’s Mountaineer Triathlon will feature two types of competitive races, an Olympic distance race and a half Ironman race. The Olympic distance race includes a 1500-meter swim, a 20k bike ride and a 10k run. The half Ironman distance race includes a 1.2 mile swim in the Monongahela River, a 56mile bike ride and a 13.1 mile run. The triathletes will be competing for $25,000 in prize money. Local athletes Tony Tarantini, 42, and Janet Gates, 48, are gearing up for this world class event by increasing their already strenuous training regiments. Both Tarantini and Gates competed in last
year’s Mountaineer Triathlon. They will be competing in the Half Ironman distance race, running for the Aquaphor.com Triathlon team. “I have done a lot of races in a lot of different places and this is far and away the most challenging triathlon course of this distance that you are going to find. It is very tough,” Tarantini said. Tarantini has been competing in triathlon events for the last six years and says this year’s Mountaineer competition will be strong. Tarantini runs Ralph’s Beer Distributor in Sabraton and is married with three children. However, he still finds the time in his busy schedule to train for these grueling events. “There is a lot of training necessary to get ready for an event like this,” Tarantini said. Tarantini will be competing in the men’s age 40-44 category. To prepare for this year’s triathlon, he has been running the Rail Trail and bikes three to four days a week. Last year Tarantini placed 12th in his age group, and 54th overall, with a time of 5:43:15.25. Tarantini hopes to finish the race with a faster time this year. “If I could finish in five hours and twenty-five minutes I would be very happy with that,” Tarantini said. Tarantini recently competed and placed in a Cincinnati marathon, which qualified him to compete in the Boston Marathon,
next April. Aquaphor.com teammate Janet Gates, is an administrative assistant at WVU from Smithfield, Pa. Gates started competing in short sprint races and gradually worked her way up to competing in triathlon events over 12 years ago. “I have always been a runner, but I think that I am pretty even in all three events,” Gates said. Gates has been training twice a day, in the morning and in the afternoon. In the morning Gates hits the WVU Rec Center to swim and lift weights, and in the afternoon she runs or rides her bike. At last year’s triathlon Gates placed first in the Women’s 45 to 49 age group and 92nd overall, with a time of 6:13:26.68. “I hope I do as well as I did last year, maybe even faster,” Gates said. Just four weeks after the Mountaineer Triathlon Gates will be competing in her fifth Lake Placid Ironman competition, which will be held Sunday, July 23. An Ironman triathlon is a 2.2 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and 26.2 mile run. “I am excited to compete, but I am dreading the training,” Gates said. Eric Liphart, marketing director at Med Express, says that because of the success of last year’s triathlon, the event has automatically gained prestige within the triathlete community, and with that, an increased level of participation.
