Sports report : Week ending Saturday 11th June 2011 Cricket On Tuesday the U14s won the toss and opted to bat first, hoping to set a good score which they could defend against Lowton Sport College. BGSB scored a healthy 8 runs in the first over with the opening pair looking comfortable. However a late call for a single saw one of the pair run out in the second over. Then entered Sam Millington who changed his normal approach of slogging everything for a more controlled approach which proved to be pivotal as he went onto score an unbeaten 52 which helped to settle the team and take them to a final score of 151 for 6. A strong attack meant that the opposition struggled to find any stability. Rob Sumner took 5 wickets for 21 runs and Imran Hashmi took 4 for 4 which saw Lowton all out for 34 in 9 overs. Special mention should also go to Jack Hutchinson, Kieran Rajasanir and Andrew Hall for some excellent fielding. All bodes well for the U14’s who now go into the 3rd round of the Lancashire Schools Cup in excellent form. Thursday saw the U12s come up against a very strong Crompton House team. BGSB won the toss and elected to bat, but were quickly under pressure when both openers were back in the pavilion without scoring. BGSB continued to lose wickets and the only partnership of note was Richard Catterall and George Round to help the team up to 49 after 20 overs. BGSB started well in the field and a string of brilliant run-outs put the visitors under pressure. The lack of runs in the first innings, however, proved to be the difference and Crompton House passed the BGSB target for the loss of 4 wickets. On Saturday all matches were against Cheadle Hulme School. In the 1st XI match, and despite some tight early bowling by Umar Ibrar, Fahad Ashfaq and Sam Excell, Cheadle Hulme scored an impressive 232 for 2 off their 25 overs. A strong opening partnership by Tom Parton and Danny Lomax ensued with BGSB averaging 10 runs per over. However some rash strokes resulted in the partnership being broken too early. Strong resistance from the middle order, with Michael Ferguson scoring 37 and Sam Excell 55 not out, meant that BGSB kept the match alive but in the end, at 153 for 5, BGSB fell well short of the required total. The U15s put Cheadle Hulme into bat first. Cheadle Hulme started confidently, but good length and line from the BGSB bowlers restricted their run rate to only a couple per over. It was not until the introduction of Inderdip Singh that BGSB got their first wicket with Cheadle Hulme’s opening batsman becoming a victim of Singh’s spin resulting in him being caught by the BGSB infield. With the opening batsmen back in the pavilion Cheadle Hulme’s middle order looked nervous with only Arnot making steady progress. Eventually Arnot was forced into a mistake by the spin bowling of Daniel Farley and the quick reactions of the BGSB infield. BGSB kept good form with the ball and reduced Cheadle Hulme to 80 all out. As in the previous fixture BGSB started poorly with the bat and lost three early wickets. However, confident batting from Connor Gaydon and Hamzah Awan soon saw BGSB reach their target and take a deserved victory. With the third round of the Lancashire Cup looming a tough away fixture against Cheadle Hulme is just what the U14s needed to iron out any creases. Cheadle Hulme won the toss and opted to bat first which was a wise choice with bad weather looking imminent. The opening pair reached a score of 26 in 4 overs and looked comfortable until a well disguised slow ball from Rob Sumner caught the opponent batter unawares and Andrew Hall was on hand to take
an excellent catch at mid-wicket. However the opponents remained steady and continued to pick up singles to keep the score moving, and it wasn’t until they reached 85 that another wicket fell. With the score at 85-2 BGSB pushed on and took the remaining 5 wickets in the final 7 overs. With BGSB looking for their highest score of the season to win the game the boys were confident after the excellent batting performance in the last round of the cup. However, the weather did not hold out and play was abandoned after just one ball. The U13 team scored a 6 run victory over tough opponents. Batting first, BGSB lost early wickets with tight fielding and well taken catches putting Cheadle Hulme in pole position. Only two BGSB batsmen reached double figures, Ben Marsi 14 and a quick hit 19 from Jack Littler. The target of 86 for the opposition looked easy but tight disciplined bowling along with athletic fielding enabled the BGSB side to grow in confidence as the match unfolded. Two excellent run outs from Ben Marsi with direct hits and four wickets for Lawrence Adlum provided the under 13 team with just enough momentum to tip the game in their favour in what proved to be a nail biting finish. The U12s lost the toss and fielded first. Cheadle Hulme were defensive almost from the start and BGSB had taken 4 wickets in the first 4 overs. Fielding was tight and James Cassidy and Ocsar Kay showed excellent skills in the field. An outstanding bowling performance from Jonny Howard (14 runs off 4 overs for 4 wickets) had Cheadle Hulme on 118 after 20 overs. The second innings had only just started when the rain came down and the match was abandoned.
