Local couples celebrating wedding annversaries D

ith all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, we find this an appropriate time to congratulate some of our area couples who are celebrating wedding anniversaries. The Loftis family gathered for Thanksgiving at the home of Richard and Marti Loftis and the group took that opportunity to honor June and Jessie Loftis for their 74th wedding anniversary. They were married on Nov. 28, 1935.

ill and Inez Leftwich Belton were married on Nov. 28, 1951. My husband, Pete, and I were their attendants so I recall that wedding very well. Can’t believe that was 58 years ago.

on and Evelyn Armstrong were married on Dec. 1, 1951, at Ft. Bragg, where Don was serving with the 81st Airborne Division. They later resided in Atlanta before moving to Mount Airy.

1952 graduates of Copeland High, hold reunion The 1952 Graduating Class of Copeland High School met at the home of Jimmy and Elaine Harbour on November 14, for their 57th class reunion. Joining Jimmy and Elaine were Geraldine and Gilmer Flippen, Katie and Wayne Draughn, Nancy Robertson, Frank and Wilhelmina McCormick, Garnet and Lou Rae Atkins, Polly Johnson, Johnny and Maxine Gwyn, Joe Davis, Barbara Gardner, Doris Ayers and daughter, Janet. Joe Davis, from Winston-Salem, was a guest in memory of his late wife, Mary Ellen, who was a member of the class. Barbara Gardner’s late husband, Carroll Gardner, was also a member of the graduating class. The original graduating class consisted of 42 members of which 19 have passed away. The group enjoyed a meal of country ham, eggs, sausage, bacon, apples, hash browns, redeye gravy, homemade biscuits and peach cobbler. The group has been meeting once a year for many years and plans to continue this tradition. Geraldine Flippen gave class members pictures she made at the last year’s reunion. Bunke named ABWA Business Associate of the Year The Granite City Charter Chapter of the ABWA named Paul Bunke as the Business Associate of the Year during a recent dinner meeting at Cross Creek Country Club. The presentation was made by Sharon Hall, vice president of the organization and branch office administrator at Edward Jones Investments While presenting an engraved plaque to Bunke, Hall commented about her boss, “He is a busy man as financial advisor at Edward Jones Investments by day but he also transforms into a coach of his son’s middle school basketball team. He is a deacon at Temple Baptist Church, interim pastor at Eastside Baptist Church and has a family ministry, “He is a member and officer of the Business Networking Group in Surry County and is a past member of the Dobson Lions Club, Surry Scan and Dobson Friends of the Library. Paul is a very supportive boss, husband, dad and friend. His passion rings true when you spend time with him,” she added. Bunke and his wife, Rebecca, have six boys, PJ, Joseph, Caleb, Joshua, Daniel and John David. A drunk driver took the lives of two of their precious children. Hall went on to say that Paul loves the Lord and has a heart as big as the world for his family.” Also honored was Billie Nell Hiatt, who was named “Woman of the Year.” Ashly Lancaster made that presentation with an engraved plaque for the honoree. She noted that Billie Nell has been with ABWA for 30 years and always tries to make sure that everyone is involved. “I feel from what I have seen personally that she devotes a lot of time and energy into ABWA. I don’t ever recall a meeting she wasn’t there. She is a past secretary, treasurer, vice president and president in 1991 and 1999. She is a model ABWA member,” Lancaster concluded. Lori Poindexter, president of the local chapter, presided during the evening. Martha Hall, co-chair of the event, introduced Jim Grimes as guest speaker. Copeland graduates hold 50th year reunion

Graduates of Copeland High School celebrated their 50th year class reunion on Oct.14 at the Lantern Restaurant in Dobson with good attendance. One classmate, upon arrival, announced, “I almost didn't come because I was afraid there would be a lot of old people here.” Peggy Wall said, “Old is not how one would describe those present. The mood was quite jovial.” She then lead the group in remembering the 11 classmates who had not survived. Wilbur Shinault read the names and a brief period of silence was observed in tribute to their memory. Graduates introduced their spouses and provided updates on their accomplishments. Food and conversation ensued with each table enjoying discussions relevant to their own interests. Martha Lane fulfilled the request from a classmate to do a routine from the senior play of many years ago. The routine was most beautifully executed - as if she just performed it yesterday, according to Wall. The reunion was a fun event with everyone enjoying the event.

Winning chickens Five-year-old Jessica Shelnutt entered three of her chickens in the Surry County Agricultural Fair and received two firstplace ribbons and a second-place ribbon. She actually aided in incubating the eggs and hatching out the chickens. She also helped her stepfather, Doug Odell, build the lot to keep them in and helps daily in feeding and taking care of the flock. Since receiving her honors, Jessica has three more sets of eggs to hatch and has quite a few chickens now. The picture to the right shows Jessica with her winning ribbons.

ith all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, we find this an appropriate time to congratulate some of our area couples who are celebrating wedding anniversaries. The Loftis family gathered for Thanksgiving at the home of Richard and Marti Loftis and the group took that opportunity to honor June and Jessie Loftis for their 74th wedding anniversary. They were married on Nov. 28, 1935.

ill and Inez Leftwich Belton were married on Nov. 28, 1951. My husband, Pete, and I were their attendants so I recall that wedding very well. Can’t believe that was 58 years ago.

1952 graduates of Copeland High, hold reunion The 1952 Graduating Class of Copeland High School met at the home of Jimmy and Elaine Harbour on November 14, for their 57th class reunion. Joining Jimmy and Elaine were Geraldine and Gilmer Flippen, Katie and Wayne Draughn, Nancy Robertson, Frank and Wilhelmina McCormick, Garnet and Lou Rae Atkins, Polly Johnson, Johnny and Maxine Gwyn, Joe Davis, Barbara Gardner, Doris Ayers and daughter, Janet. Joe Davis, from Winston-Salem, was a guest in memory of his late wife, Mary Ellen, who was a member of the class. Barbara Gardner’s late husband, Carroll Gardner, was also a member of the graduating class. The original graduating class consisted of 42 members of which 19 have passed away. The group enjoyed a meal of country ham, eggs, sausage, bacon, apples, hash browns, redeye gravy, homemade biscuits and peach cobbler. The group has been meeting once a year for many years and plans to continue this tradition. Geraldine Flippen gave class members pictures she made at the last year’s reunion. Bunke named ABWA Business Associate of the Year The Granite City Charter Chapter of the ABWA named Paul Bunke as the Business Associate of the Year during a recent dinner meeting at Cross Creek Country Club. The presentation was made by Sharon Hall, vice president of the organization and branch office administrator at Edward Jones Investments While presenting an engraved plaque to Bunke, Hall commented about her boss, “He is a busy man as financial advisor at Edward Jones Investments by day but he also transforms into a coach of his son’s middle school basketball team. He is a deacon at Temple Baptist Church, interim pastor at Eastside Baptist Church and has a family ministry, “He is a member and officer of the Business Networking Group in Surry County and is a past member of the Dobson Lions Club, Surry Scan and Dobson Friends of the Library. Paul is a very supportive boss, husband, dad and friend. His passion rings true when you spend time with him,” she added. Bunke and his wife, Rebecca, have six boys, PJ, Joseph, Caleb, Joshua, Daniel and John David. A drunk driver took the lives of two of their precious children. Hall went on to say that Paul loves the Lord and has a heart as big as the world for his family.” Also honored was Billie Nell Hiatt, who was named “Woman of the Year.” Ashly Lancaster made that presentation with an engraved plaque for the honoree. She noted that Billie Nell has been with ABWA for 30 years and always tries to make sure that everyone is involved. “I feel from what I have seen personally that she devotes a lot of time and energy into ABWA. I don’t ever recall a meeting she wasn’t there. She is a past secretary, treasurer, vice president and president in 1991 and 1999. She is a model ABWA member,” Lancaster concluded. Lori Poindexter, president of the local chapter, presided during the evening. Martha Hall, co-chair of the event, introduced Jim Grimes as guest speaker. Copeland graduates hold 50th year reunion

Graduates of Copeland High School celebrated their 50th year class reunion on Oct.14 at the Lantern Restaurant in Dobson with good attendance. One classmate, upon arrival, announced, “I almost didn't come because I was afraid there would be a lot of old people here.” Peggy Wall said, “Old is not how one would describe those present. The mood was quite jovial.” She then lead the group in remembering the 11 classmates who had not survived. Wilbur Shinault read the names and a brief period of silence was observed in tribute to their memory. Graduates introduced their spouses and provided updates on their accomplishments. Food and conversation ensued with each table enjoying discussions relevant to their own interests. Martha Lane fulfilled the request from a classmate to do a routine from the senior play of many years ago. The routine was most beautifully executed - as if she just performed it yesterday, according to Wall. The reunion was a fun event with everyone enjoying the event.

Winning chickens Five-year-old Jessica Shelnutt entered three of her chickens in the Surry County Agricultural Fair and received two firstplace ribbons and a second-place ribbon. She actually aided in incubating the eggs and hatching out the chickens. She also helped her stepfather, Doug Odell, build the lot to keep them in and helps daily in feeding and taking care of the flock. Since receiving her honors, Jessica has three more sets of eggs to hatch and has quite a few chickens now. The picture to the right shows Jessica with her winning ribbons.
