MINOR IN ISLAMIC STUDIES About the Minor
Degree Requirements
The 21-credit minor in Islamic Studies gives undergraduates an introduction to the diverse and dynamic experience of Muslims globally and locally. Through its interdisciplinary offerings, students will acquire an understanding of Islamic religious traditions, history, politics, society and culture. This can serve as an excellent foundation for graduate work in the field, or in national and international careers involving Muslim societies.
See the university catalog for policies governing all minors. Students pursuing this minor complete 21 credits distributed as follows: • Three core courses (9 credits):
The minor consists of three core courses and three electives, as well as a language requirement. The core courses provide a background in the religious traditions of Islam, its history and its politics. Elective courses allow students to choose from a variety of courses in a number of other fields to complement their majors or to suit their own particular interests and goals. Students in the minor program can also fulfill credit requirements through study abroad programs offered through GMU’s Center for Global Education. Morocco, Palestine, Egypt, Turkey, and Jordan are some of the countries where students have travelled to enrich their intellectual experience in Islamic Studies.
