Spring Time Mug Rug

This cute little Mug Rug would be great to use during tea time with a friend! Finished Size of Rug: 6 1/2” X 9” wof = width of fabric Fabric Requirements & Materials Needed: * 7” X 9” Pellon Insul-Fleece, batting, or waterproof sheet * 2” X 1/2 wof strip...8 different prints * Thread to match fabrics * 1/4 yd. print...base and binding * 4 1/2” X 10” print...pocket * 3” X 10” print...pocket * ½” X 4” green rick rack – flower stem * Scrap print...appliqué * Scrap fusible bonding Use ¼” seam allowances unless otherwise instructed. Before you start you will need to cut a 7” X 9” piece of Pellon Insul-Fleece, which is waterproof, a piece of batting or I cut a piece from a waterproof sheet that I bought. If you want the rug to be waterproof, I would recommend either the Insul-Fleece or the sheet. Take your 2” strips and press them in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Lay your 7” X 9” base piece (right side down), your inner product, whatever you chose, and then lay your longest strip, folded edge along the 7” side, stitch and trim. You will use this strip again as your final strip. Continue to sew your strips on. You can either sew them straight or on alternating angles. You should have 9 strips sewn on. Pockets & Flower Appliqué: Take your 4 ½” X 10” strip and your 3” X 10” strip and with right sides together, stitch them along the 10” edge. Press seam flat. Press entire piece in half, wrong sides together, creating a 5” X 7” pocket. Using scraps from your strips, trace your flower appliqué on the smooth side of a piece of fusible bonding, iron to the wrong side of the fabric you are using for the appliqué, and cut the piece out. Pull off the release paper, place on the pocket and fuse down. Use a piece of ½” X 4” piece of green rick rack for the stem. Machine appliqué using your favorite stitch. * If you’d like to appliqué a funky letter on the rug, consider inquiring about our “Caboodle Alphabet.” Once you have your appliqué done, lay the pocket on the mug rug, lining up the raw edges, making sure the folded edge overlaps the strips you’ve sewn on. Stitch in the ditch along the seam on the pocket. Trim rug to 6 ½“ X 9”. Continuous Double-fold Binding: Take the 2 ¼” strip that is left and press it in half lengthwise. Begin on the 10” side of the rug, on the right side, and place the binding strip along the raw edge of the rug as shown in illus. #2. Make sure you have a little extra binding to stitch your final seam. Start stitching 1” from the first corner using your ¼” seam until you get ¼” from the corner as shown in illus. #3. Backstitch. Remove the piece from the sewing machine. Fold the binding strip upward, creating a diagonal fold, and finger-press as shown in illus. #4. Holding the diagonal fold in place with your finger, bring the binding strip down in line with

the next edge as shown in illus. #5. Make a horizontal fold that aligns with the rug edge. Start sewing again at the top of the horizontal fold, stitching through all layers. Sew around your project, turning each corner as you have just been instructed. When you get to the final corner of the rug, stitch the corner and then 1” of the final edge. Unfold ending binding and smooth along edge of the rug. Lay the creased end of the beginning binding over the ending binding and trace the diagonal onto the bottom layer as shown in illus. #6. With right sides together, align the newly marked line on the ending binding with the creased line in the beginning binding. Pin in place and stitch, trim seam to ¼” and press seam flat as shown in illus. #7. Refold the remaining binding and realign the two raw edges with the edge of the rug and stitch in place. Press and turn the binding over the edge of the piece to the backside and pin in place. Hand-stitch the binding to the backing fabric, making sure to cover the stitching line. Fold a miter in each corner as you come to it. Take a couple of stitches in each corner to secure the mitered folds. If you chose, you can stitch the binding to the backside, turning then to the front and machine topstitch the binding in place. ©Leanne Anderson 2014
