The Ferretti Group is based in Forlì, Italy, and many of its 2,000 employees work remotely and internationally. The IT team supports four data centers, three in Italy and one in Miami, Florida. The IT infrastructure is virtualized on VMware vSphere and includes hundreds of Windows and Linux virtual machines (VMs) that support critical applications such as SAP ERP and Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint and SQL Server. Ferretti began the move to virtualization in 2006. The IT team had a backup tool in place for its physical severs but did not find it effective for virtual servers. “Implementing a traditional backup process in a fully virtualized environment was not an option for us,” said Guido Angelo Ingenito, IT Infrastructure & Security Manager for Ferretti. “The licensing costs were too high, and it was nearly impossible to achieve suitable recovery time and recovery point objectives.” The IT team evaluated several virtualization-specific backup products to find the solution that would address Ferretti’s critical disaster recovery and business continuity requirements. Ingenito and his team wanted a reliable solution that was easy to deploy and run, and one that would work well with the legacy backup tool they were already using. It lets the IT team run a VM directly from a compressed and deduplicated backup file. When a critical Web server was accidentally lost, Instant VM Recovery was used to restore it quickly. “We maintain many Web sites that are extremely important to our business, since they are our luxury showcase on the Web,” Ingenito explained. “We were able to restore the server in record time and had all the sites up and running again in minutes. There was literally no impact on our business.
