Kingston Technology Company, Inc. has one of the most extensive and stringent product testing processes in the memory industry. The company’s research and development (R&D) lab supports this process through its study of memory performance. The R&D lab also studies product performance for the company’s IT infrastructure. Like many enterprises, Kingston has virtualized most of its applications but was hesitant to virtualize tier 1 applications such as SAP and Microsoft SQL Server. “We decided to conduct an internal study to understand the risks involved with virtualizing these business-critical, resource-intensive applications,” said Dr. YP Chien, IT Manager at Kingston. “We looked at several comparatives during this project including application performance, hardware usage, storage and full system restore. Protection of tier 1 applications was definitely one of our main concerns. If we were going to virtualize our tier 1 applications on VMware vSphere, we needed a fast, reliable, high-performance backup and recovery solution.”
The Veeam Solution Chien and his colleague Edward Shen, Systems Engineer for Kingston, found the one data protection solution most capable of backing up and restoring their virtual machines (VMs) running SAP and SQL Server: Veeam® Backup & Replication™. “When you’re backing up and recovering a tier 1 application, performance is key,” Chien said. “Veeam performs so well that we’ve never had to contact its support team. Veeam is fast, reliable and robust, giving us the confidence to virtualize SAP and SQL Server.” Chien and Shen tested Veeam in the virtual environment and another backup tool in the physical environment. With Veeam, a full backup of SQL Server (a total of 1.5 terabytes of data across three VMs) took two hours, and an incremental backup took less than one hour. A full backup of SQL Server in the physical environment took 12 hours; an incremental backup took four hours. With Veeam, full recovery of SQL Server took two hours, while full recovery of SQL Server in the physical environment could take 10 hours or more and was a complicated process. Veeam enables Kingston to set new service level agreements (SLAs) through improved recovery point and recovery time objectives (RPOs and RTOs).
