THE CHALLENGE: Deploy a disaster recovery backup solution for the VMware environment that ensures reliable recovery time and recovery point objectives, while keeping the total cost of ownership at a minimum.
L’Oréal has offices, production sites and warehouses all over the world. The Denmark office provides shared IT services, and Anders Juhl Nielsen, SAP Basis Consultant for L’Oréal, supplies SAP service for six countries: Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Holland and Belgium. The SAP infrastructure includes one physical server for the ERP production system, seven VMware ESXi hosts and approximately 65 virtual machines (VMs) that contain the supporting systems for SAP. When the management team in the Denmark office mandated a disaster recovery plan for the entire SAP infrastructure, Anders and his colleagues looked at several VMware backup solutions, including Veeam. They already used SAP tools to back up the physical server but needed a product for the VMware hosts that provided quickrestore functionality, as required in the disaster recovery plan. “Our goal was to find a comprehensive yet cost-effective product that would keep both recovery time and total cost of ownership as low as possible,” Anders said.
