Xtium creates flexible IT solutions that fit clients’ specific business needs and enable them to remain in control of their data. When Xtium began looking for a more efficient way to offer virtual machine (VM) backup and recovery to clients, the company focused on specific criteria. “We wanted a holistic solution for virtualized environments,” said Tim Vogel, Chief Technology Officer for Xtium. “At the time, we were piecing together several solutions for backup, replication and recovery, so our goal was to find a unified solution that was more efficient and affordable.” Vogel and his colleagues had one more goal: partner with a company that would help Xtium explore additional revenue streams. “We’re always looking for ways to offer new and improved services to clients, so we had to find a partner that had the technology to help us do this. Veeam provides powerful and affordable protection for virtualized applications and data on VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V. It unifies VM backup and replication in a single solution, enabling Xtium to consolidate backup, replication and recovery processes for clients. “Veeam gives us a holistic solution for virtualized environments,” Vogel said. Not only did we improve operational efficiencies, we saved 25% in operational costs by eliminating the previous tools we were using and 20% in operational time by automating processes.” One of the ways that Xtium automated processes is through Veeam’s fast recovery capabilities. Since Veeam runs a VM directly from a compressed and deduplicated backup file on regular backup storage, Xtium can recover individual objects from any virtualized application and recover files from any guest operating system and file system—without booting the VM. “Item-level recovery was a manual process for us in the past, but with Veeam it’s automatic, saving a great deal of time,” Vogel said. “We’re looking at additional ways to automate processes with Veeam, which will enable us to offer new services to clients and increase our revenue.” Xtium is currently reviewing two additional Veeam capabilities: SureBackup™, which automatically verifies the recoverability of every backup, and On-Demand Sandbox, which lets users run VMs from backups in an isolated environment for quick and easy testing and troubleshooting.
