ST 831 Polemics (Islam, Roman Catholicism, Mormonism, and the New Atheism)

Course description:

This course will introduce the student to the major apologetic themes relating to evangelizing and responding to Islam, Roman Catholicism, Mormonism, and the “New Atheism.”

Course instructor:

Dr. James White is the director of Alpha and Omega Ministries, a Christian apologetics organization based in Phoenix, Arizona. He is a professor, having taught Greek, Systematic Theology, and various topics in the field of apologetics. He has authored or contributed to more than twenty books, including The King James Only Controversy, The Forgotten Trinity, The Potter’s Freedom, and The God Who Justifies. He is an accomplished debater, having engaged in more than seventy-five moderated, public debates with leading proponents of Roman Catholicism, Islam, Jehovah's Witnesses, and Mormonism, as well as critics such as Bart Ehrman, John Dominic Crossan, Marcus Borg, and John Shelby Spong. He is an elder of the Phoenix Reformed Baptist Church, AZ.

Course requirements: (1) Lectures

Student must satisfactorily complete the following course requirements:

The student must listen to all 17 lectures by Dr. James White, which can be accessed on RBS Virtual Campus. The student must read at least 600 pages from the following works in their entirety: Mohler, R. Albert Jr. Atheism Remix. Crossway, 2008. White, James R. What Every Christian Needs to Know About the Qur’an. Bethany House, 2013. White, James R. The Roman Catholic Controversy. Bethany House, 1996. ______, Is the Mormon My Brother? Solid Ground Christian Books, 1997.

(3) Book review

Students will select a book from the required reading list. The review should be between 1,200 and 1,500 words. No review under 1,200 or over 1,500 words will be accepted. The review should be 12 pt. font, Times New Roman, single-spaced, and justified margins. The book review must be emailed to the seminary dean ([email protected]) who will forward it to Dr. White.

(4) Final Exam

After completing the lectures and reading, the student must take a final exam. The exam is worth 70% of the student’s grade and will test the student’s aptitude on the lecture material. If the student has any questions, he may email Dr White at [email protected] or the seminary dean.

Course grading:

Lectures and reading = 20% / Book review = 10% / Final Exam= 70%
