2015-16 St. Cloud State Women’s Basketball

The Match-Ups: The St. Cloud State University women’s basketball team will host Concordia, St. Paul on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall for the first round of the NSIC Sanford Health Tournament.

PREVIOUS GAME RECAPS: Minot State (Feb. 19) The St. Cloud State women’s basketball team faced off against Minot State in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) match up. The Huskies fell to the Beavers with a final score of 73-63.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS: Jan. 3, 2016-- The St. Cloud State women’s basketball team matched up against the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) action. The Huskies trumped the Golden Bears with a final score of 84-74.

Andrea Thomas (Mauston, Wis.) recorded her first double-double of the season. Thomas finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. She also had a team-high seven assists. Karissa LeCaptain (Algoma, wis.) added 12 points and 5 rebounds. LeCaptain made six of ten shots from the field. Chelsea Nooker (Green Bay, Wis.) recorded 12 points and 2 steals. Betsy MacDonald (St. Paul, Minn.) finished with 12 points and 3 assists.

Junior guard Betsy MacDonald (St. Paul, Minn.) led the Huskies with a season-high 19 points. MacDonald made five of seven from behind the arc and dished out six assists.

Overall, St. Cloud State shot 40.9% from the field, 30.8% from behind the arc and 50% from the free throw line. Minot State shot 47.3% from the field, 37.5% from the threepoint range, and 83.3% from the line. The Huskies outrebounded the Beavers, 37-32. U-MAry (Feb. 20) The St. Cloud State University women’s basketball team took on the University of Mary in their final Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) match-up of the season. The Huskies, who defeated the Marauders earlier this season (70-51 on Jan. 22), fell to U-Mary with a final score of 73-66.

Sophomore guard Andrea Thomas led the Huskies with nine assists. Thomas had 13 points and was perfect from the free throw line making five of five.

Karissa LeCaptain (Algoma, Wis.) led the Huskies with 19 points and 11 rebounds. This marks the seventh double-double of the season for LeCaptain. Chelsea Nooker (Green Bay, Wis.) added 12 points. Nooker recorded a team-high seven assists. Betsy MacDonald (St. Paul, Minn.) went three of nine from the three point range and finished with 11 points. Andrea Thomas (Mauston, Wis.) recorded 11 points and 8 rebounds. Overall, St. Cloud State shot 30% from the field and 33.3% from behind the arc, while the University of Mary shot 44.2% from the field and 33.3% from the three-point range.

Senior forward Karissa LeCaptain (Algoma, Wis.) finished with 18 points and nine rebounds. LeCaptain is averaging 12.3 points per game on the season and leads the team in rebounds averaging 8.3 per game.

Junior guard Chelsea Nooker (Green Bay, Wis.) finished with 16 points. Nooker recorded seven assists, two blocks, and three steals. Lauren Novak (Eau Claire, Wis.) tallied a seasonhigh 11 points. Novak made three of five shots from the three-point range. St. Cloud State shot 49.2% from the field compared to Concordia-St. Paul’s 45.2%. The Huskies outrebounded the Golden Bears 39-29. St. Cloud State’s largest lead came at 3:56 in the third quarter with 16 points. The Huskies were able to force the Golden Bears into 13 turnovers. Caitlyn Russell led the Golden Bears with 23 points and 7 rebounds.

Fish’s Career Coaching Record

Head Coach Lori Fish Year Overall NSIC 4-4 4-1 Lori Fish is in her eighth season as head coach 2015-16: SCSU of the St. Cloud State women’s basketball team in 2014-15: SCSU 16-12 11-11 2015-16, and her 12th overall as a collegiate 2013-14: SCSU 16-11 12-10 coach. In 2015-16, St. Cloud State posted a 16-12 overall record and an 11-11 record in the NSIC, which was good for a fourth place finish in the NSIC’s North Division. The Huskies charted a 16-11 overall record in 2013-14 under Fish’s leadership and went 12-10 in the NSIC that season. In 2012-13, the Huskies scored a 19-9 overall record (the best finish since the 2008-9 season) and a North Division Title in the NSIC. Fish, a St. Cloud native, is the eighth coach in the history of the women’s basketball program. She is very familiar with Husky basketball as she was an assistant coach under Dr. Lori Ulferts from 1999 to 2004.

In her first season with the Huskies, Fish guided St. Cloud State to a 22-9 overall record, won the 2009 NSIC Sanford Health Tournament Championship, and an NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament appearance. Fish has compiled an 11-year career record of 170-138. She brings 24 years of coaching experience, including 22 years at the collegiate level to the Huskies’ program. During her career she has coached teams that have made six NCAA Division II National Tournament appearances including the 2008-09 St. Cloud State women. A familiar name to the St. Cloud area, Fish grew up in St. Cloud and attended St. Cloud Tech High School. Following her graduation from Tech, she went on to play basketball at South Dakota State from 1986-1990 and competed against the Huskies in the North Central Conference. Following the completion of an outstanding collegiate playing career where she gained First Team All-Conference honors as a junior and senior, Fish entered the coaching ranks. She started as a high school coach in Foley, Minn., for two seasons before returning to South Dakota State as a graduate assistant coach. She spent one year at NCAA Division I Eastern Illinois University and returned to SDSU as an assistant. In 1999, Lori Ulferts hired Fish as an assistant to the Husky program and she served as the recruiting and strength and conditioning coordinator under Ulferts for five seasons. In 2004, Fish became a head coach at rival Minnesota State University, Mankato. She quickly distinguished herself as a rising young coach and in 2007-08, her final season with the Mavericks, led her team to a 23-9 record and the championship game of the NCAA Division II North Central Region Tournament. She compiled a 62-53 won/loss record with the Mavericks.

Huskies Picked to Finish Fifth Overall In the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Women’s Basketball Preseason Coaches’ Poll, announced this afternoon, St. Cloud State was predicted to win the North Division and finish fifth overall.

St. Cloud State Huskies 2014-15 Record: 16-12, 11-11 NSIC

The Huskies (16-12, 11-11 NSIC) return Second Team All-NSIC player Lexy Petermann (Fond du Lac, Wis.) Head Coach: Lori Fish (8th yr.) this season. Petermann averaged a team-high 14.2 points a game in finished 12th in the NSIC in scoring. Record at SCSU: 120-97 She also ranked eighth in the league in rebounding (7.2), while shooting .462 from the field (138-for-299) Career Record: 183-151 and .381 from three-point range (32-for-84). The SCSU women’s program is by led head coach Lori Fish. Fish is in her eighth season leading the squad and has finished at .500 or better in five of her first seven seasons with a high win total of 22 in 2008. Lexy Petermann is the NSIC player to watch. Petermann played in 25 games in her third season with the Huskies. Petermann averaged 14.2 points per game. Recorded a career-high for Petermann against U-Mary with 15 rebounds. Another career-high and school record for Petermann came against Mayville State on Dec. 30, 2014 with 49 points.
