IN THIS ISSUE
Welcome to the 2013-2014 Season Greetings! I am excited to update you on what has been happening with Husky Track and Cross Country. I am pleased with where we are headed as a program, and the way this group of athletes have come together. We just wrapped up the cross country season and have been practicing with the track and field team for the better part of three months. Cross country has flown by, and after a warm weathered start, the cooler fall conditions provided an optimal environment for Championship racing. The men’s team dealt with some preseason adversity, but saw a bright spot for the future arise in true freshman Johnathan Hess. Hess improved nearly every meet, adjusting well to the 8k race, and leading the men’s team as our top finisher at the NSIC conference meet with a season best performance. The very young women’s team was led by Senior Kassie Vaness, who finished as the Huskies’ top runner in four of six competitions, earning All-‐Conference honors th with a 15 place finish at the NSIC Championship. True freshman Sam Sunstrom followed Kassie’s lead and put her
best race together when it counted, guiding the team at the NCAA Central Regional Championship, and earning All-‐Region rd honors with a 23 place finish. On the track we have large freshmen classes on both the men’s and women’s side, from whom we expect many points this year. The men will be very strong in the sprints, relays, hurdles and jumps; look for them to place high in everything from the 100m to the 800m, as well as both relays, and the jumps at the conference meet. A number of our athletes have the potential to rewrite a number of school records. On the women’s side, we added much needed depth in the middle distance, long sprints and jumps. That depth will help to improve the relays and open up the opportunity to rewrite some school records there as well. With all that we have at hand, I’m excited to see what these great young men and women will do in the upcoming season. Go Huskies! Eric Hanenberger Head Cross Country/Track & Field Coach

2013-2014 Indoor Track Preview
Raising the Bar
Expectations are higher for the Huskies as th the men look to build upon a 5 place finish th and the women an 8 place finish at last year’s NSIC Indoor Championships.
2013 Indoor 600m Champion
Freshman, JoVonte Suber (St. Louis, MO) won the NSIC Indoor 600m title with a SCSU Record performance of 1:21.09.
Two solid recruiting classes have set the program up for a bright future, but for another year or two it will be underclassmen dominated roster with only a few upperclassmen to lead the way. The men will rely heavily on returning seniors George Kawalawu (Brooklyn Park, MN) and Leon Cheneyon (Brookyln Center, MN). nd th Kawalawu finished 2 in the 60m and 8 in th the 200m while Cheneyon placed 4 in the 400m. Between the two they hit national provisional marks in the 60m, 200m, 400m and 4x400m Relay. The men will also put pressure on their talented underclassmen. Sophomores JoVonte Suber (Mid-‐D), Joe Mooney (HJ), Ryan Johnson (T), Jackson Walters (H) and Darryl Howard (S) along with freshman Dillando Allotey (S), Rashad Harris (Mid-‐D), Keyshawn Davis (J), Richard Carr (S) and Yinka Oyebanjo-‐Odofin (H/S) are expected to score well in their respected events.
Alumni Spotlight
th
Heather Koch (Miller) ’10 placed 6 in the Pentathlon at the 2013 USA Track & Field Indoor Championships and th 5 in the Heptathlon at the 2013 USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships.
The women will count on what is arguably the most talented sophomore class in the NSIC to lead the way. SCSU was the only program to score a freshman in every sprint event at last year’s Outdoor Championships. Sophomores Alicia Evans (S), Laure Olson (H/J/Multi) and Kellan Flynn (HJ) will team with freshman Jasmine Grant (S), Jenny Gilbreath (S/J), Cassie Cardinal (T) and Patience Yalartai (J) along with transfers
Heather Clankie (T) and Keidre Wade (S) to make for a young and exciting group. Rounded out by a strong distance group led by Senior Kassie Vaness (Portage, WI) and Freshman Sam Sunstrom (Sauk Rapids, MN) the women look to make a push into the top half of a tough NSIC Conference. Combined the men and women had nine individuals hit 11 national qualifying provisional marks during the 2013 indoor season. George Kawalawu was the sole participant at the 2013 NCAA DII Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Alabama. George qualified for the 60m dash with the th th 16 fastest time in DII. He placed 17 at the meet. This season the Huskies hope the see that number increase dramatically.
2013 Van Nelson Invitational The annual Van Nelson Invitational will be hosted at the Halenbeck Hall Fieldhouse on th January 18 , 2013. The ‘Van Nelson’ will have a different feel to it this year as it will be operated as a ‘triangular’ featuring NSIC opponent Concordia University-‐St. Paul and MIAA member Emporia State University.
12 Meet Records were broken at last year’s meet and we expect another great day of competition from all three programs.
