Headteacher Mr R Madeley th
Newsletter 9 – 20 November 2015 Dear Parent / Carer, The following children have been awarded a Gold Award Certificate this week. They will receive their certificates th on Friday 27 November in the Celebration Assembly at 3.00pm. Lilian Belsten, Joe Marsden Reception Hannah Montet, Lily Adams Year 3 Jack Finlay, Elena Norton, Iona Fursey Year 4 Alex Sansom, Elliot Peart, Harvey Crombleholme Year 5 Rosie Weston, James Westley, Jack Easton Year 6 Well done to you all for setting such a fabulous example to everyone in our school Our Grand Opening Last Tuesday our new wing was officially opened by the Rt Revd Paul Slater, Bishop of Richmond. It was a wonderful occasion, marking the start of this new chapter in our school’s long history. As well as the Bishop we had an excellent turnout of invited guests, including local councillors, senior representatives from Leeds Children’s Services, members of our local community and former staff. It was particularly pleasing to see and thank people who have been so involved in achieving success with this project, such as Fiona Woodall, who as head started the whole thing, and Luke Greenwood, who managed the work on site so well. Our Reception children and 4G sang beautifully to entertain the visitors and our Year 6 children again fulfilled the role of tour guides with confidence and charm. On reflection, it was a little strange opening a building we have been using for months, but it was an important symbolic event and we are very pleased it went so well. Leeds Grand Mosque Trip The Year 5 trip to the Leeds Grand Mosque was a resounding success. The children learnt a great deal about Islam and worship at a Mosque. I would like to thank parents for their support of this trip, even following the events of last Friday night in Paris. I was particularly pleased that there were no withdrawals from the visit as a consequence of the terrorist attacks. Through the visit the children learnt that these actions were in direct conflict with the teachings and spirit of Islam. Compassion in Action Thank you for all the support from parents and families in raising money for the Royal British Legion (£330.57) and Children in Need (£366.80). These are both very good causes and I am proud that St Oswald’s School can support their work. St Oswald’s Church Christmas Fair st Tomorrow (Saturday 21 November) St Oswald’s Church will be using our building for their Christmas Fair! (Yes, I know it is still November, but in a spirit of Christian charity we will forgive them!). The fun begins at 2.00pm and entry is free. There will be lots of stalls selling Christmas gifts [including St Oswald’s School tea towels – the perfect stocking filler!!] and home-made produce. There will be lots games and activities, especially for children, and, of course, their famous afternoon teas. I have even heard that Santa is hoping to be there to take note of any Christmas present requests! All the money raised will go towards the St Oswald’s Tower Fund.
Open Evening for Prospective Parents th On Tuesday 24 November (next week) we will be holding an Open Evening for parents who may be interested in their child starting at St Oswald’s in Reception or Year 3 next September. This evening is for those who were unable to make it to the Open Day we ran earlier in November. If you know anybody in this position, please do let them know. The event will start at 6.30pm and will include a presentation from me and tours of the school. Carol Service th We will be holding our Christmas Carol Service on Wednesday 16 December, starting at 2.00pm. This year all our Reception children will be performing a nativity, with the story being told by narrators from Year 6 and illustrated with Christmas songs by the whole school. It will be a wonderful event and parents will be very welcome to attend. Christmas Dinner Those children who normally have a packed lunch can still order a school Christmas dinner. The deadline for ordering rd a Christmas Dinner is Monday next week (23 November). Birthday Sweets There is still time for you to express your view as to whether children should be allowed to bring sweets to school for the class on their birthday. Please visit the school blog and click on this icon on the right hand side of the screen. Parents’ Group Update At the Christmas Fair, the Parents’ Group will be selling tea towels (£4 each), have a “Guess how many sweets in a jar” game and a wheel of fortune; please go along and support them. If you can’t make it to the Christmas Fair, tea towels will be sold outside school from 3.15pm on Friday 4th December. These tea towels will be the present everyone wants this Christmas so make sure your loved ones aren’t disappointed! The next Parents’ Group Meeting will be at 8pm on Thursday 26th November. The venue is The Red Lion. Those attending will enjoy a drink and socialising, as well as electing a new Parents’ Group Committee planning events for next year and finalising disco arrangements. Please go along even if it is just to get to know a few more St Oswald’s parents. You never know, once there you might be inspired with a great idea or an urge to get involved with the important work of the Parents’ Group. The School Blog Our School Blog now has a new more modern look. It is a good place to look to get an insight into the fabulous learning at St Oswald’s. The address of the blog is: www.stoswaldsleeds.blogspot.com, so why not add this to your favourites. You can also leave comments on posts to encourage the children. There will be a delay before your comment is visible online as all comments are moderated first. Recent Posts: The Official Opening 4B design technology Yr5 trip to Leeds Grand Mosque
