At-home mission project! In an effort to serve God’s people in our midst, the Vestry of Historic St. Peter’s has agreed to join in an at-home mission project with its brothers and sisters of Altavista Presbyterian church, where two homes are being updated and renovated for habitation. It is our privilege to work on one of the homes. There are many chores to be done in this home. Jan Parry has posted a sign-up sheet where members can indicate their level of interest … anywhere from painting to helping prepare a meal. Additionally, there is an opportunity to donate or purchase a badly-needed new stove for the kitchen. There is a basket marked “stove” in which members can place checks and/or cash.

Everyone is also asked to bring some canned food which will be distributed to the Food Banks in the Lynchburg Convocation. To sign up, members should have their reservations and payment to Aubrey Rosser no later than August 10 so that he can send one check on. 1

Rector’s Corner Mission

What a wonderful opportunity was presented to us this month … the at home mission … for so many reasons. First of all, it offers us an opportunity to roll up our sleeves and actually do the work we are called to do. Secondly, it allows us the privilege of collaboration with our brothers and sisters from Altavista Presbyterian Church. Thirdly, the fellowship and the bonds that grow between us as we work side by side on a project outside of ourselves are priceless! Sometimes the Holy Spirit surprises us in these moments and calls us to deeper relationship with God and with one another. Thank you one and all … and special thanks to Jan Parry who has organized our efforts in behalf of St. Peter’s. On another note, you may be interested in knowing that our Diocese is now in the process of receiving names for candidacy of our new Bishop. Three names will be presented to our delegates and diocesan clergy on March 9 of 2013 for the election. Your delegates, Jo Kelley and Aubrey Rosser will be voting on the new bishop at that time. Our September newsletter may be a combination September/October as I will be making a pilgrimage to Iona from August 29 returning on September 11. It has been a long-time dream of mine to visit this holy Island off the coast of Scotland where St. Patrick sent St. Columba to Christianize the residents there. An Abbey was established and from this Isle, monks were sent out throughout Europe, evangelizing and serving the people. I will be sending (hopefully) photos on Facebook for those of you who keep in touch through this medium. In the meantime, remember that you are loved and you are blessed and you are a blessing to others! Blessings abound!

Senior Warden’s Column Next week, the Altavista Presbyterian Church (APC) will begin wonderful “Mission At Home” projects, and St. Peter’s Episcopal will help. Instead of off-site projects, as in previous years, the APC Mission Committee has chosen to make renovations to two homes right here in Altavista. Work will begin on Monday, August 6, and conclude Saturday evening, August 11, with a blessing of the homes. The purpose of the At-Home Mission is twofold. First, the renovation work is needed, to make sure the project homes are safe and more comfortable. Second, the local projects will allow more church members to experience mission work. Some people are unable to travel to destination missions. With the At Home projects, more people can share the fulfillment and spirituality of mission work. With this in mind, the organizers have scheduled activities just like traditional missions. Each day will begin and end with group prayer. Morning devotionals are at 7:00 AM at the Presbyterian Church. Onsite work will begin at 7:45 AM and end at 5:30 PM, followed by delicious dinners each night at the Church and more fellowship. The days will end around 8:00 PM. It will be a rigorous week and much will be accomplished, including roofing, plumbing, painting, re-flooring, and more. St. Peter’s is providing volunteers, dinner on Wednesday, and a new kitchen stove for one of the houses. The response has been great and I am very proud of our commitment to help. APC Pastor Kelsy Brown and the Mission Committee have expressed their thanks, not only for our physical help, but for the opportunity our participation provides their members for ecumenical fellowship. I’ve told them that we are equally thankful. (continued on page 3)

(continued from page 2) Thank you to all who are providing time and talent. I recognize and appreciate that not all can work, due to jobs and other reasons. All can help though by keeping this project and all involved in our daily prayers next week.

Prayer for Election of New Bishop Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a bishop for this Diocese, that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for St. Peter’s Gracious God, from whom all good things come to us, we, the members of St. Peter’s, ask for your guidance as we seek to reorganize ourselves for the future. We ask that you send forth the Holy Spirit to help us in our deliberations and to send to us a faithful pastor to guide our future efforts. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

News from the Pews Congratulations to Linda Williams for recent recognition of 500 hours of volunteer service with the Lynchburg Area Master Gardener Program. (See notice in News and Advance, 7/31/12) Linda’s dedication to gardening is evident right in our own church yard. She designed and planted a biblical herb garden that thrives and provides herbs for the picking. Thank you again for our wonderful garden, Linda, and for your community efforts. Special thanks to the Charles & Linda Eubanks for the harvest of tomatoes shared not only with members but with DAWN recipients as well!

Our newsletter is for all! So, if you have something to share with the congregation, please feel free to send it to me anytime during the month for the next issue. Don’t worry about deadlines! Photos & News Welcome!
