What is the design of the STAAR assessments? The rigor of items has been increased by assessing skills at a greater depth and level of cognitive complexity.
STAAR assessments have been designed to focus on “readiness” standards, which are defined as those Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) student expectations that are not only essential for success in the current grade or course but also important for preparedness in the next grade or course.
How is STAAR different from TAKS?
TAKS Grade-level tests - e.g. Grade 9 Math
STAAR EOC Course-based tests - e.g. Algebra I Students assessed when enrolled in the course
Untimed 4 tests required for graduation
Four-hour time limit Up to 12 tests required for graduation
Passing standard on Exit Level math exam considered for graduation
Cumulative points from all math exams considered for graduation
• The total number of test items for the STAAR assessments has been increased for most grades, subjects, and courses.

How will the results be reported for the STAAR Math 8 exam? Performance standards have not been established for STAAR Grades 3-8. Results from STAAR Math 8 will be reported as a raw score until the Fall of 2012 when the standard is applied.
How will the results be reported for the Algebra 1 and Geometry EOC? Unlike the STAAR Math 8 exams, the passing standards for the EOC exams will be established in the Spring of 2012.
Minimum Performance
Unsatisfactory
Satisfactory Performance “Passing”
Satisfactory

How are the EOC exams and high school graduation connected? Depending on their graduation plan, students must earn an established cumulative total for the three math EOC exams to meet graduation requirements. Students must achieve a minimum score on an EOC assessment for the score to count toward his or her cumulative score. Minimum Performance

What if my student does not meet the Satisfactory performance standard on the EOC? Districts are required to provide accelerated instruction to each student who fails to perform at the Satisfactory performance standard on an EOC. Retesting opportunities will be in the summer, fall, and spring of each year.
