Stansted Airport: Enhancing onward travel Stansted Airport, winner of the ‘Skytrax World’s Best Airport for Low-Cost Airlines’ 2011 and 2012, currently serves 18 million passengers a year. With approval to serve 35 million per year in the future, it’s the only London airport with space and permission to grow. The Stansted Transport Forum, established in 1999, creates and delivers a Surface Access Strategy to increase public transport usage to and from the Airport. The partnerships that have been created between the private and public sector as part of the Stansted Area Transport Forum have led to the surface access successes at Stansted. The Surface Access Strategy reduces the Airport’s environmental impact, but also enables a smooth onward journey for Stansted’s passengers; enhancing their welcome and airport experience. Bus and Coach use has been the key catalyst for growth of public transport mode share at Stansted. The network of services and destinations has grown year on year and travel by bus and coach has increased from 7% of passengers in 2000 to almost 24% in 2011 – this now equates to just over 4 million passengers per year.

Brand new rolling stock has been introduced on the Stansted Express rail service in 2011 which now provide a first class connection between Central London and Stansted Airport. These trains are the newest fleet in the UK to operate at an airport. Marketing techniques include innovative targeted promotions, such as the ‘Don’t Kiss and Fly’ and ‘He’s your Dad, not a Taxi driver’ campaigns and online discounts.
Touch screen travel information kiosks and information desks provide simple to use information and advice, assisting arriving passengers to reach their destination with a minimum of stress and confusion. The free Stansted Airport app for iPhone and Android provides the information passengers need for a smooth stress free experience of Stansted Airport.

As a result of the Stansted Transport Forum’s success, Stansted remains the number one major Airport in the UK for public transport mode share and in the top tier in Europe. Significantly, almost 48% of Stansted’s passengers travelled by public transport in 2011.
