Lead

Q. How do I know if the toy I have has lead?

A. For a complete list of lead toy recalls, visit the State Department of Health’s Lead Hazard Product Recall website at: http://www.nyhealth.gov/environmental/lead/recalls/index.htm or call the NYC Environmental Health Department at 1-800-458-1158.

A. A child can get lead poisoning by swallowing or breathing in lead. Lead is most commonly found in old paint. Lead poisoning can cause problems with a child’s growth, behavior, and ability to learn.

Q. What should I do

if I have a toy that has lead? A. Children should not be allowed to play with these toys. The State Department of Health recommends that you check the recall notice to learn how to return the toy for a refund or replacement.

*The current voluntary recall does not require stores to remove dangerous toys from store shelves.

Follow these tips to help prevent lead poisoning due to children’s toys: TOYS TO AVOID: • Painted toys that little children may put in their mouth • Antique toys and collectibles • Try to buy toys made in the USA as much as possible

THINGS YOU CAN DO: • Check the Department of Health website or call to find out about recalled toys • Remind your doctor to test your child for lead at 1 and 2 years old. Ask the doctor about testing older children. • Give books and clothes as gifts instead of toys that may have lead
