April 11, 2016 Greetings from Community and Continuing Education, Summer is fast approaching and we are once again connecting with you to share the details of the 2016 S.T.E.P. Programs. We are looking forward to hosting the S.T.E.P. program at HWDSB Secondary Schools. Participating in S.T.E.P. can encourage student engagement in learning, demonstrate to parents our commitment to their students’ success and provide a fun learning opportunity for students during the summer. S.T.E.P. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: Program Summary: S.T.E.P. is a two week transition program for current Grade 8 students to: become acquainted with their Secondary School, review Literacy and Math in preparation for Grade 9, learn new strategies for balancing their high school workload and to meet new classmates and build relationships for a more confident start in Grade 9. Program Dates: August 8 to 19, 2016 – 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Each Secondary School requires a minimum of 15 confirmed grade 8 student registrations from their feeder schools to create a S.T.E.P. class. The number of classes at each school and the schools running programs will be determined centrally at the CCE Red Hill Learning Centre (based on student registrations). Offered at NO CHARGE to students. Programs are available to all current grade 8 students regardless of academic level.
No Educational Assistant support will be available.
Important Dates:
Week of April 11th – CCE will send out electronic flyers and registration information (on‐line) to Elementary schools for distribution to all Grade 8 students. Please feel free to post these forms on your school website and if possible, please include the dates and a heads up about program registration in your April Newsletter. Week of April 18th – Hard copies of Flyers and registration information (on‐line) are sent out to Elementary schools to distribute to all Grade 8 students on behalf of CCE. May 27th – Online student registration forms are due Week of May 30th – CCE will send Elementary Principals the list of registered students to be approved for participation. Students will need to be cross‐enrolled in PowerSchool – information and instructions will be sent to your Office staff with a list of students to be cross‐enrolled.
June – CCE will send confirmation e‐mails to participating students. August 8‐19, 2016 – S.T.E.P. programs run in the Secondary Schools. As we move forward with S.T.E.P. for HWDSB’s current Grade 8 students, we appreciate the support of Administrators, staff and parents in the recruitment process at the school level.
