Stephen- A Model Deacon Acts 6 & 7 1. The apostles were quickly presented with a dilemma created by the growth of the Church. Conflict between Jewish and Greek people resulted. 2. Their solution was brilliant—Get more people involved. Seven men were selected to serve. Emphasis on function more than title. 3. Every worker in the church should be full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom. 4. Only 2 of the seven are ever heard from again in scripture. 5. Steephen’s life is presented as an example of a devoted deacon. 1. STEPHEN
DISPLAYED GODLY CHARACTER
1. Stephen was full of the right stuff. a. the Holy Spirit v. 5, 8 & 7:55 b. Faith v.5 c. Grace v. 8 d. Power v. 8 e. Wisdom v. 3 f. Great works v. 8 2. Steven was stable. 3. Steven was strong.
2. STEPHEN BOLDLY DECLARED GOD’S WORD 1. Stephen preached in at least five different congregations and was opposed strongly. 2. The opposition began to secretly persuade false witness and stir the people up against Stephen. 3. They seized him and forcibly drug him before the Sanhedrin. 4. They accused him of blasphemy. 5. Stephen show grace and poise and began to preach. 6. He declared the history of God’s people. 7. He confronted their wickedness. 8. He convicted their hearts.
3. STEPHEN COURAGEOUSLY DIED FOR HIS FAITH 1. There are worse things than death. 2. Stephen saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at God’s side. 3. Stephen requested forgiveness to the ones who murdered him. 4. This was the beginning of Saul’s conversion. HAVE YOU BEEN CONVERTED? ARE YOU FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT? ARE YOU A SERVANT OF THE LORD?
