STRADE BIANCHE ROAD RACES & TT Idyllic Western Michigan is the setting for this extraordinary day of Italian-themed bicycle races in stunning Ottawa County—dynamic competitions reminiscent of old Tuscany where da Vinci, Vivaldi, d’Este and Michelangelo helped define the Renaissance and capture the world’s attention centuries ago. Racing commences soon after daybreak with the Chrono Strade Bianche, the ultimate test of rider and machine. It’s a 20km competition against the clock on a swift yet technical seven-turn course stretched across exceptionally groomed gravel/dirt roads—strade bianche or white roads in the Italian language—that lead to exceptionally fast asphalt, all winding through softly rolling landscape that attracts millions of visitors yearly. For all riders, the Chrono Strade Bianche features omnium scoring in combination with Strade Bianche Road Race results to determine an overall podium. For Category 2 and 3 riders, omnium points may be applicable toward future upgrades. Later the same day for racers of all categories, talent and experience, the Strade Bianche Road Races present an identical challenging corsa of low-travelled, well maintained surfaces that are designed to draw out everyone’s cycling talents as they race throughout the day for the podium. Che bello! How beautiful! CHRONO STRADE BIANCHE TT 20km – $40 (JRs $30) – TT, RR, CX, MTB or SS bike Omnium Scoring (7, 5, 3, 2, 1) on field of 10 riders or more. STRADE BIANCHE ROAD RACES & TT TECHNICAL GUIDE – Chrono Strade Bianche / Strade Bianche Road Races Online registration thru USAC opens upon permit approval (a small registration service fee is added) and closes at 8 p.m. ET, Thur., Aug. 24. Registration is then on-site, day-of. Total entry fee includes $3.75 surcharge for USAC supplemental insurance coverage.

Raceday Registration fees are $10 greater than those listed on this flier. All racers must be USAC licensed. Buy annual- ($70) or one day- ($15) license when registering online, or if registering day-of. All race-day transactions are Cash Only ($US), Exact Amount Only (no change).

Riders registering for more than one race get $10 off the second race fee. Thus, this applies when registering for omnium. Time trial start times will be posted in advance on the Chrono Strade Bianche website by 8 p.m. ET, Fri., Aug. 25. If you miss your start time you 1) will be started and timed at the discretion of the USAC referee, or 2) might miss your TT altogether. Higher categorized racers will be seeded after lower cats to assist in recovery before road races commence and to assist in the completion of the TT before road racing begins. Pre-reg racers are seeded before day-of registrants. Road Races are listed by flights. All categories in the respective flight should be at the start line by the listed flight time—in the event that categories are combined, and to receive officials’ instructions. Each race will then begin incrementally, as determined and announced by race officials at that time. Separately listed road races may be combined if fewer than 20 riders are registered in each category. However, the final decision will be made by the Race Director after consultation with the Chief Referee and Starter. Road Race Registration numbers may affect Race Director’s decision to combine fields upon conference with USAC officials, yet every reasonable effort will be made to keep listed categories separate—as posted— for racers’ benefit. Again, review this flyer and its technical guide for details on scoring and awards, and on omnium costs, eligibility and scoring, and its separate podium awards

TECHNICAL GUIDE – Chrono Strade Bianche / Strade Bianche Road Races (continued) OMNIUM: Scoring will be according to USAC rules and follow national championship scores: 7-5-3-2-1 points awarded for first through fifth places in each race, each event (TT, RR). If separate RR categories are combined into a single race, omnium scores will reflect the race’s Top 5 finishers only, not the Top 5 finishers of each category within the single race. Omnium scoring will apply in fields of 10 or more riders only. Time Trial field will split into separate Men’s and Women’s categories when 10 riders (or more) of each gender register. Separate podiums recognizing Top 5 Omnium finishers have separate awards and presentations, also noted on page two of this flier. Though it’s very possible that racers will score in only one race (the TT or the RR), to be eligible for omnium awards a racer must race and finish the TT and the RR. DNS, DNF, DQ or similar are not eligible for omnium award. The Top 5 racers in the omnium competition(s) must appear at the respective ceremony to receive their award. Podium award ceremonies for individual races will be held during the next flight of races, i.e. first flight race podiums will be officially recognized and the awards given during second flight racing. Ceremonies recognizing second flight race podiums will take place during third flight races. Podium ceremonies not conducted during flights two or three will be held—and purses awarded—upon the completion of third flight races. This includes omnium ceremonies. Any podium finishers—individual race and/or omnium—risk forfeiture of their winnings if not appearing for his/her podium ceremony. No awards will be mailed/delivered. This all reads tougher than it will be. Podium winners who attend podium ceremonies demonstrate their respect for their fellow racers, fans, the sport in general and the race specifically, and their attendance provides guaranteed photo opportunities to formally record their accomplishment(s) in images and to capture the day’s memories. Resulting photo(s) are also forwarded to news media and USA Cycling (upon request) for possible post-race publication and exposure. Everyone wins when winners are formally recognized. No one wants a podium photo with one of its winners absent. EQUIPMENT: Choice of bike(s) to race is the individual rider’s. Bikes must meet USAC regulations (see page 39 of USAC rules for details). Generally, any road, cross, mountain, or hybrid bike in the road race must not have bar attachments, i.e. cow horns, TT clip-ons, etc. No e- or supplemental-powered bicycle may be raced. Time trial bikes may not have aerodynamic protective coverings. The course is regularly reconnoitered using carbon fiber, sprint-geometry road frame with 23mm tyres. Predominantly carbon fiber-framed road race bikes were raced by the field in 2016. All are welcome! Road racing and time trialing is generally about the engine (heart, legs, spirit) not the motor (bike).

TECHNICAL GUIDE – Chrono Strade Bianche / Strade Bianche Road Races (continued) DIRECTIONS / PARKING: Races are held just west of Grand Rapids, Mich., in conjunction with the celebrated St. Michael Parish Annual Community Festival and Dinner. Bring your family and friends to the bucolic grounds of St. Michael church and school and join festival goers who’ll cheer on racers throughout the afternoon. Take I-96 to Exit 16, north to the turning circle, where you go west on Randall Ave. (as if returning to the highway) veering right onto State Rd. (to avoid returning to the highway) which becomes Cleveland St., to 88th Ave. Turn right/north on 88th toward St. Michael. The address is 17150 88th Ave., Coopersville, MI 49404. Please park off the pavement along 88th Ave., staying clear of driveways, intersections and the race course. Stay aware of cyclists and pedestrians around you and your car doors. REGISTRATION: Registration is alongside St. Michael’s School near its playground. Indoor restrooms are available at the school’s playground entrance. There is no parking, no warm-ups, no follow cars on the course. Riders: carry tube/pump/lever. Registration closes 30 minutes before race start.

Preliminary race results will be posted for 15 minutes allowing for protest then are official. Similar to Italy’s Tuscany region, Ottawa County has wildlife, livestock and pets that do not always obey manmade barriers. Beware of animals, farm equipment and local vehicles on the race course. Keep dogs on leash. Before and between races enjoy the sights of songbirds, hawks, wild turkeys, deer, coyotes, hedgehogs, American bison, tifosi (race fans) and other wildlife that visit or call this area home. Races go, rain or shine. Obey USAC officials at all times as they determine much, including any relegations, disqualifications, postponements, cancellations, et al. There are no refunds of registration fees for any reason. Obey Ottawa County Sheriff officials and course marshals. Thanks to Ottawa County Road Commission, Ottawa County Sheriff Department, Polkton and Crockery Townships, West Michigan Coast Riders bicycle club, St. Michael Parish, Loose Spokes, Family Fare Supermarkets and residents along the race route, the Strade Bianche Road Races and TT are held on an exceptionally maintained, well-marked and well-marshaled course, and promise again in 2017 to be a most remarkable day of racing. You will thoroughly enjoy the challenge and the rewards. Please remember: Respect all riders, communicate on the course, be safe, and above all else—have fun. Viva il Strade Bianche!

STRADE BIANCHE ROAD RACES & TT As competitor in Chrono Strade Bianche, match your talents and aspirations with this bellissimo corsa to give maximum effort both with and against prevailing summer winds, Earth’s gravity, and Newton’s Laws of force and friction—or an intermittent lack of grip if you overcook a section. Your combination of speed, power, endurance, finesse, composure and panache will guarantee success.

Whether part of a team or unattached, racing Strade Bianche Road Races will reward you with a remarkable route that promises multiple areas to challenge rivals and apply your racing skills, with tree-lined corners, curves and rollers to escape out of sight, open wind-swept flats to create echelons and snap the peloton’s elastic, long straightaways to crush opponents’ will and short uphills that will take your last kilocalorie to win or even finish strong. Veteran riders may wish to utilize the omnium to improve their ranking points and petition to move toward upgrading categories. Less experienced racers are encouraged to race the TT to increase your chances to podium, and to familiarize yourself with the course to devise tactics to employ in your road race later in the day. All riders can choose to race the TT and RR to discover how they rate against competitors in that day’s omnium, to add another podium to their palmares, and to see first-hand how their range of skills combine and show results.

On the page below is a detailed course map from 2016 that notes start/finish line, distance remaining to finish, and other general features of the race and course that assisted in riders’ preparation. There is also a replica profile on the course’s approximate length. Riders in 2016 came from metropolitan Detroit, suburban Chicago, northern Indiana and from across Michigan to compete in, enjoy and earn a result at Strade Bianche Road Races. Upon reconnoitering the race course later in 2017 a similar map for will be created and made available to participants to assist in their race preparation. Ciao, avid bicyclists, ciao!

STRADE BIANCHE ROAD RACES & TT Strade Bianche Road Races and Chrono Strade Bianche TT considers itself privileged to provide a raceday atmosphere that both enjoys and enhances a large, day-long roster of community fun that’s arranged annually by St. Michael Parish. Attracting hundreds of families and thousands of participants from across west Michigan to its yearly celebration, the St. Michael Festival serves complete chicken dinners for more than four hours, beginning at 11 a.m., and also includes other activities for cyclists and their friends and families such as a kids playground and game tent, country store, grocery wheel, mini-raffle, craft vendors, entertainment, BINGO and more! In 2016, the St. Michael Grand Prize Raffle winning ticket featured $5,000 payout. In 2016, Pastor Ayub Francis Nasar blessed the race and riders at the onset of the Strade Bianche Road Races just as Pope Paul VI blessed racers and the 1964 Giro d’Italia in Vatican City. Both Strade Bianche and its riders expressed their gratitude for this unique raceday feature and have extended the invitation for Pastor Ayub to participate again this year. At Strade Bianche 2017 there’s so much more than racing for your family, friends, bike club and supporters to enjoy.

Race photos will be available in the days afterward. Monitor the race website for updates.

STRADE BIANCHE ROAD RACES & TT RaceClean is the USAC anti-doping program. Cheaters are dopes, and doping is cheating. It undermines the principles which make participating in sport worthwhile and is one of the most common concerns among USAC’s membership. That is why USAC collaborates with riders, teams, Local Associations and Race Directors (including the Strade Bianche race director), the U.S. Anti-doping Agency and international agencies to fight doping in sport. All athletes deserve a level playing field and sense of fairness in their competition. RaceClean funds anti-doping tests administered by USADA at both the elite and amateur levels of cycling. Testing works. Penalties—even for amateurs—can be significant. A first-time offender can be suspended from the sport for up to four years. Find out more about RaceClean. Volunteers, whether at the Tour of California, Giro d’Italia or Chrono Strade Bianche and Road Races, are a key component to creating and providing a successful cycling event for everyone. Volunteers with Strade Biache will have unrivaled views of the racing, be fed through the day, and leave for home with keepsakes unique to Strade Bianche. Registered racers or their family members who volunteer for at least half the day can have half their advance registration fee returned in exchange for their commitment to the race.
