STRATEGIC PLAN FOR ST. MATTHEWS You are the salt of the earth. But if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lamp-stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:13-16 BACKGROUND St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church has undertaken a process of strategic planning to discern the future of this lively and growing congregation. The strategic planning effort is designed to build on the strengths of the past, which are considerable, and at the same time honor the need to move in creative, new directions. The plan will look out 5 to 7 years into the future, and will be built upon input from the congregation and other information. As a result of the strategic planning process, a document will be created that provides a clear and inspiring vision for the future, building on the strengths of the past and the gifts of the present as it addresses unmet needs and challenges facing the church. This document will become an action plan for the church to live into the future it desires. This work, along with Merrill Wade’s sabbatical, is funded by a grant from the Eli Lilly Foundation STRATEGIC PLANNING TEAM A group of about 25 people will be working over the next six months to create the Strategic Plan. This team was selected to represent the broad make-up of the congregation and includes differing interests, ages, and length of membership. The leader of the team is Scott Murphy (

The phases are: 1. Information Gathering. This step will include getting input from the congregation and gathering information from other sources to understand where the congregation is now and to garner ideas for the future. 2. Strategic Plan Development. The team will develop a purpose, mission, vision, values and key results areas in this phase through a series of meetings. This planning will be based on information gathered in the previous step. 3.
Implementation Plan. Goals and actions will be set to set priorities and to carry out the plan.
The final Strategic Plan for St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church will be completed by the end of 2011 to be presented at the annual parish meeting in January, 2012. CONSULTANTS Betsy Aylin (
