Strategies for learning vocabulary Vocabulary is best learned when you do something with it – don’t just look at it! To be most effective, it is also best to try to learn vocabulary regularly. A little and often is the best approach. Try some of the strategies below to see what works for you and add any new ideas you have: 1. Look – Cover – Write – Check 2. Type words / phrases into a Word document then black out every other letter and see if you can fill the missing letters in. 3. Record yourself saying the words onto your computer or into your phone. Play the recording back to yourself, perhaps when you are doing something else such as tidying your room! 4. Concentrate on the difficult words and invest your efforts into learning these. 5. Copy words/phrases onto post-it notes and stick them around your room. 6. Ask someone at home or a friend to help test you. 7. Create a story with the words you are learning. 8. Draw pictures in a scene of the words you are learning and label them.
