AT A GLANCE: Population: 55,181 Demographic Profile: White: 49 % Hispanic/Latino: 39% African American: 23% Asian: 5.3% Population under age 18: 20% Percentage of children and adolescents who are overweight or obese: 46% New Brunswick Thought Leadership on Open Streets When 4,000+ residents took to the streets during the first New Brunswick Ciclovia on October 6, 2013 they likely did not realize that opening a sevenmile loop of city streets to meet neighbors, bike, skateboard, dance, enjoy music, and play took nine months of concerted planning and organizing on the part of a diverse partnership of committed leaders representing 30 community organizations and the city of New Brunswick. Strategies NJPHKNew Brunswick’s policy goals are to increase access to healthy food and create safe environments by focusing on
four strategies: Strategy #1: Increase opportunities for physical activity through improvement of parks, development of agreements between schools, the city, and the community for indoor and outdoor physical activity space and support of planning grants for safe walking and biking. Strategy #2: Partner with New Brunswick Public Schools to transition the district nutrition policy to a comprehensive wellness policy in order to improve opportunities for healthy eating and physical activity in New Brunswick schools. Strategy #3: Assist in establishing the New Brunswick Community Food Alliance, a policy council committed to the development and maintenance of a sustainable local food system which provides its residents access to adequate amounts of nutritious, safe, affordable, and culturally appropriate food at all times in socially acceptable ways. Strategy #4: Provide refrigeration equipment to increase access fresh produce and healthier meat options for three local faith based emergency food providers and expand their ability to provide healthier foods to the New Brunswick community.
