Benefits for Student-Athletes with ‘Good’ Insurance A student athlete who has what is considered “good” medical insurance still carries a deductible, and most likely requires a co-payment for office visits. Once an injury occurs, the Student-Athlete Accident Policy begins paying immediately for bills that are incurred; therefore the deductible and all co-payments for the student athlete’s policy are paid by the accident policy, resulting in no out-of-pocket payments for the student athlete. Benefits for Student-Athletes with HMO or Limited Insurance A student athlete with an HMO policy or a policy that limits their coverage area will have the benefit of being able to be referred to local clinics, get necessary diagnostic testing and follow-up procedures, as these will be covered under the accident policy, with no out-of-pocket payments for the student athlete.

The University of Mary Sports Medicine Department strives to provide a comprehensive medical care program to our student athletes. The sports medicine staff is responsible for the primary health care of all varsity student athletes, in conjunction with our team physicians from the Bone and Joint Center, and Mid Dakota Clinic. The main functions of our staff are to provide pre-participation clearance for all students who intend to participate in varsity athletics, as well as the care, prevention and rehabilitation of all athletic injuries/illnesses that occur while participating in intercollegiate athletics. Treatment and rehab of injuries are free of charge to our student athletes. The University of Mary does not provide primary health/medical/accident insurance coverage for student-athletes. The primary policy is the responsibility of each student-athlete. The NCAA requires that each student athlete be covered up to $90,000 for injury care, at which time the NCAA Catastrophic Coverage Policy will take over.
