Student-Athlete Host Guide WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO HOST A PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETE ON THEIR CAMPUS VISIT
As a CU student-athlete, you are an integral part of an outstanding university and athletics program. You have earned the privilege of representing yourself, the entire student body, faculty, staff and alumni of the University of Colorado Boulder. This honor and privilege comes with a high level of responsibility. As a member of the Athletics Department, you are accountable for your own actions and for the actions of your teammates. It is important that you demonstrate exceptional character through your integrity and honesty, both as a member of the campus community and as a participant in athletics competition.
WHAT MAKES A GREAT HOST? Being a host is an important job with many responsibilities. These guidelines have been set forth by the NCAA and CU Boulder; violating them may result in you or your team becoming ineligible. To have fun and avoid potential ineligibility, please read carefully.
Entertainment Money: You may receive up to $40 per day to entertain a prospect, $60 per day if you have two prospects at the same time. This money can be picked up in the Business Office on the 5th floor of the Champions Center (#510M). Remember to bring your PHOTO ID!
Please spend the money on the prospect. It is important that you show them all of the opportunities available at CU and in Boulder.
WHAT THE ENTERTAINMENT MONEY IS FOR:
After the visit, you must report back to your coach or operations staff detailing what you spent the money on while the prospect was here. You MAY keep any unused money at the end of the visit to fill your gas tank, replenish the food eaten at your house by the prospect, etc. You could be subject to a post-visit interview with the Office of Compliance Services to obtain information about the activities during the prospect’s visit.
All entertainment must come out of the host money. Prospects (or their parents) cannot supplement the host money with their own money. The host money must pay for everyone in attendance at the entertainment activity. If you use your own vehicle to drive to the entertainment activity, you may use the host money to pay for your gas. The NCAA does not list any specific host activities, but here are some good ideas: A movie at 29th Street Mall Ice cream on Pearl Street Paintball, laser tag, mini-golf, bowling Hiking Chautauqua Attending a home CU sporting event
WHAT THE ENTERTAINMENT MONEY IS NOT FOR: Souvenirs or other CU mementos for the prospect to take home. Cash to give to the prospect. Alcohol, drugs, gambling or solicitation. You and the prospect may not consume any alcohol or drugs during the visit. You may not provide the prospect alcohol or drugs. This is true even if you or the prospect is 21 years old.
Professional Sporting Events Free tickets to professional sporting events (Broncos, Rockies, etc.) given to CU or to you as the host cannot be used, even if they are your personal season tickets. If you choose to purchase tickets, the host money must cover the total cost of the tickets, parking, additional food outside meals, etc.
FOOD The prospect’s meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner & 1 snack) are NOT included in this $40. Your coach will pay for the prospect’s meals. Any additional food must come out of the $40 daily entertainment money.
Transportation CU (or your coach) is not permitted to provide you with a vehicle to use during the visit. Never allow the prospect to use your car without you.
AREA Limitations All entertainment activities must take place within a 30-mile radius of campus. Although most of Denver is within this radius, certain areas of southeast Denver are outside of this boundary. Ski trips to the mountains or trips to Fort Collins or Colorado Springs are prohibited. See the 30-mile radius map online at www.cubuffs.com/ComplianceCorner or in our office (4th floor Champions Center).
