Students from Secret Garden Montessori took a walking field trip to Frenchtown’s Community Garden recently to learn about the composting process hands-on. Garden volunteers, John Mizin and Richard Reilly, welcomed the five- and six-year-olds and toured them through the garden plots, then explained the composting process.
Here with a garden volunteer are, (from left) Jonathan Trainor of Milford, Liam Wilde of Pittstown, Cora Anderson of Riegelsville, Pa., and Henry Masiello of Hampton.
Besides smelling, tasting and identifying vegetables and herbs from the garden, the children planted beans and chard. The highlight of the visit was digging for red wiggler worms, known as ‘the heroes of the garden,’ to add to the compost heap.
