Hello fellow film lovers,

For showtimes visit celebrationcinema.com/indie

I am so excited to announce that the Indie Film Series at Studio C! has been extended to the month of April so that we can bring you more wonderful independent, intelligent films. We are thrilled to be showing the Oscar winner for the Best Foreign Language Film, The Salesman, by the Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, one of my favorite directors, whose A Separation and The Past have been shown in past Indie Film Series.

THE SALESMAN

Forced to leave their apartment due to a dangerous construction project in a neighboring building, a young Iranian couple moves to the center of Tehran where they become embroiled in a life-altering situation involving the previous tenant. Beautifully acted, totally absorbing and thought-provoking! Director Asghar Farhadi, who also helmed the Oscar-winning feature A Separation, wins this year’s Oscar for Best Foreign Language film. (Favorite director of Susan Woods).

We are bringing you a true independent film, Donald Cried (not that Donald) that has received rave reviews for its exquisite writing. Please check it out. Jim Jarmusch’s new film, Paterson, is a beautifully observed film about the triumphs and defeats of the ordinary life of a poetic bus driver. Adam Driver gives a bravura performance. We then offer another Oscar nominee for Best Animated Film, My Life as a Zucchini, a deeply touching, funny, human and quirky stop motion film from France. You will experience the gamut of emotions with this film. Hint: be sure to stay for the credits.

DONALD CRIED

MY LIFE AS A ZUCCHINI

PATERSON

Peter, a Wall Street banker, returns home to Rhode Island to settle his grandmother’s estate. Upon losing his wallet, he must ask his only connection to the past, Donald, for help. Cringing and fighting back waves of regret and revulsion, Peter realizes that Donald is a living, wheezing reminder of what he escaped — and escaped being. This sharp debut film is resolutely realistic while mining plenty of pathos, humor, and drama from the situation. Winner, Audience Award, American Film Institute Film Festival.

Nominated for an Oscar, this stop-motion animated feature’s silly title and adorable characters belie a sensitive story whose colorful visuals delight the senses even as it braves dark emotional depths. After his mother’s death, Zucchini enters a foster home with the help of Raymond, a police officer. Eventually he learns to love and trust with the help of the other orphans. This film accomplishes the almost impossible — it is heart-wrenching and uplifting at the same time.

Jim Jarmusch’s latest is a beautifully-crafted film about a week in the mundane life of a bus driver (Adam Driver) in Paterson, New Jersey. Every day, Paterson (yes, the same name) adheres to a simple routine: he drives his daily route, observing the city as it drifts across his windshield; he writes poetry into a notebook; he walks his dog; he stops in a bar; he goes home to his wife, Laura. By contrast, Laura’s world is ever changing. They love each other. The film quietly observes the triumphs and defeats of daily life, along with the poetry found in the smallest details.
