Question – Are there any ways to better accommodate pedestrians other than sidewalks? Concern – There is a very narrow spot near motel & Smith Flat Rd. Concern – No crosswalks at Pointview Dr. and no street light at Jacquier. Concern – Cyclists would prefer to use El Dorado Trail. Concern – Some pedestrian issues are homeless people that are intoxicated and are particularly dangerous to traffic when walking on the roadway. Concern- Need to consider downhill traffic- too fast! Concern - Fatality east of Waffle shop. Question- Is there a way to change conditions at that commercial strip into a residential strip so that the speed limit can be lowered to 25mph through Broadway? Concern – Apple Hill season- traffic gets much worse through Broadway. Concern- Trash on Broadway. Concern- Daily Upper Room shelter meals at 4pm (lots of foot traffic). Question- Will there be an uphill direction ‘rest stop’ for walkers/riders? Hope – There should be a refresher course on Bicycle trail “manner’s” to remind everyone of safety of trails. Hope - This could and will hopefully improve the aesthetics of Broadway and might encourage people to keep the strip clean(er) and free of trash. Concern- Site distance @ Smith Flat intersection- dangerous! Concern- Hidden hang out spot for homeless in the creekside bushes- this is a potential problem for bikers and walkers. Concern – There is a new State requirement that a vehicle must pass a bicyclist 3 feet from them (clearly there is not enough room to do that) look at other fencing/areas to create this lane. Question- How is the law enforced along narrow roads? Question-What about people in wheelchairs? Question – There is a utility pole too close to road- will this be relocated? Concern – This path is dangerous at night- can’t see anything so you must drive with high beams but then you are also blinding the oncoming traffic. Have no choice- must use high beams- very poor vision around the downhill bend. Hope/Question – Perhaps expand the road? Is this possible? Hope/Question- Is there any way to incorporate sidewalks? Question- Will City maintain sharp blackberry bushes along the bike path? Hope – Adding the bike lane will hopefully keep the homeless away. Concern – LIGHTING / VISIBLITY/ ACTIVITY – these are main concerns. Question/ Concern – There isn’t currently enough space for a cop to pull someone over on that section of road. Page 1 of 2
28. Question/Concern- Estimated completion of job????! 29. Hope- That the bike lane would accommodate ALL foot traffic and make them comfortable- make them want to use it. COMMENTS WRITTEN ON COMMENT CARDS AT MEETING (3 cards received) 1. Concern – Pedestrian traffic, drunk walkers swerving into traffic; Drunks congregating. 2. Ideal – include an excellent suggestion for the Clay Street/Cedar Ravine “mess” – I fear to drive or walk there. 3. Hope- Initial preference to accommodate bicyclists would be to widen road. 4. Hope- I really hope that the Broadway Bike Lanes project includes trash cans, lighting, wide bike lanes. 5. Concern– That the project would cease. To minimize concern, I would like to know that funding is secured and that the project will move forward. 6. Fear – That adding bike lanes will bring more homeless people around. 7. Concern – Inadequate street lighting! 8. Hope – To see the bike lanes paved to accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians. 9. Concern – The road is already VERY narrow. 10. Hope – Initial preference would be to make Broadway wider first. The El Dorado trail should be sufficient for the trail headers! 11. Hope – To have street lights put in and maybe a fence between roadway and bike lane. 12. Concern- If project doesn’t include widening of Broadway. 13. Fear– That this project will increase danger to those driving (auto’s) upper Broadway. 14. Concern– To minimize concern I would like to see Broadway made wider- lots wider- with good wide shoulders; those that walk, need a safe place to walk. COMMENTS BY EMAIL/OTHER AFTER THE MEETING None received NEXT STEPS 1. City and consultants to prepare conceptual project alternatives. 2. Community Meeting #2 in November. Exact date is TBD.
