Press Release 5 November 2015 SADLER'S WELLS ANNOUNCES SPRING/ SUMMER 2016 SEASON Sadler’s Wells today announced a world-class programme for its Spring/ Summer 2016 season, including a number of new commissions, world premieres and UK premieres by a host of exceptional companies. Contemporary dance, ballet, circus, flamenco, tango, hip hop, family productions and even horses feature in the ambitious programme, which runs from January to July 2016. Highlights include: - Royal Ballet star Natalia Osipova leaps into the world of contemporary dance in a specially commissioned programme also starring Sergei Polunin, co-produced by Sadler’s Wells (June) - Michael Hulls, Nitin Sawhney and Lucy Carter take over Sadler’s Wells’ building with immersive multi-sensory production No Body (June) - Dancers and horses perform on stage in a UK premiere by acclaimed French artist Bartabas (March) - Associate Company English National Ballet celebrates the work of three outstanding female choreographers in a triple bill (April) - UK premiere by Associate Artist Crystal Pite (May) - UK premiere from contemporary circus trailblazers The 7 Fingers (April) - Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch and Rosas become Sadler’s Wells International Associate Companies Russian ballet star Natalia Osipova leaps into the world of contemporary dance in a programme produced by Sadler’s Wells and Muz Arts, which receives its world premiere from 29 June to 3 July. Acclaimed contemporary choreographers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Russell Maliphant and Arthur Pita have created new work inspired by this unique ballerina. This is the first time a programme has been commissioned for the dancer. For these world premieres she will be joined by Sergei Polunin; this will be the first time they will perform together in the UK. The theatre’s building is turned inside out for the world premiere of No Body, a multi-installation work produced by Sadler’s Wells that brings together the essential elements of performance without the physical presence of dancers (7 - 12 June). No Body is an unprecedented exploration of lighting, sound and projection and features specially commissioned works by lighting designers Michael Hulls and Lucy Carter, and composer Nitin Sawhney. Among other highlights of the coming season at Sadler’s Wells are performances from some of the world’s top international dance companies, including horses and dancers performing together in the UK premiere of Golgota by acclaimed French artist Bartabas, accompanied by contemporary flamenco dancer Andrés Marín (14 - 21 March). Inspired by the theatricality of sacred rituals, Golgota navigates the bodies of human and animal performers through a dramatic environment of Gregorian chants and physical poetry. The legendary Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch presents the last work completed by Bausch before her death in 2009, “…como el musguito en la piedra, ay si, si, si…” (11 - 14 Feb). Golden Hours (As You Like It), the latest radical creation from contemporary dance icon Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, comes to Sadler’s Wells (8 & 9 March). The work is loosely structured
around Shakespeare’s As You Like It. Both companies have been given the title of International Associate Company. Sadler’s Wells’ Associate Artist Crystal Pite presents the UK premiere of Betroffenheit, created with Jonathon Young (31 May & 1 June). The work builds on Pite’s Olivier-Award-winning success with Polaris and cements her place as one of the most inventive and exciting choreographers working today. Contemporary circus trailblazer The 7 Fingers (Les 7 doigts de la main) presents TRIPTYQUE, a triple bill of dance and circus (1 & 2 April). The work is a collaboration with some of the world’s most cutting-edge contemporary choreographers: Marie Chouinard, Victor Quijada and Marcos Morau. From the UK, Sadler’s Wells’ Associate Artist BalletBoyz returns with the world premiere of Life, featuring new commissions by Pontus Lidberg and Javier de Frutos (24 - 28 April). New Wave Associate Alexander Whitley and digital artist Memo Atken join forces to combine dance and motion-responsive technology in new work Pattern Recognition (7 & 8 April). The piece raises questions about learning and memory in relation to artificial intelligence. Richard Alston Dance Company presents the world premiere of An Italian In Madrid as part of a quadruple bill (29 & 30 March). Sadler’s Wells’ Associate Company English National Ballet celebrates the work of three outstanding female choreographers in a triple bill featuring world premieres by Aszure Barton, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and Yabin Wang (13 - 16 April). balletLORENT presents a mystical adaptation of Snow White, retold by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and directed and choreographed by Liv Lorent (25 - 26 March). The team behind the acclaimed Rapunzel creates a fantastical dance theatre production of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale for family audiences, as part of Sadler’s Wells’ annual Family Weekend. Breakin’ Convention, Sadler’s Wells’ ground-breaking festival of hip hop dance theatre and culture, returns for its 13th year (30 April & 1 May). Curated by Sadler’s Wells’ Associate Artist Jonzi D, the programme includes champion b-boy crew The Ruggeds (The Netherlands), experimental b-boy Iron Skulls (Spain) and leading street dancer Antoinette Gomis (France). Ahead of that, the Spring/ Summer 2016 season starts with the acclaimed London International Mime Festival (9 Jan – 6 Feb), which includes performances from Jakop Ahlbom Company and Family Floez, and flamenco takes over Sadler’s Wells in February with the Flamenco Festival London (16 - 28 Feb), including a new show by Sara Baras.
