ARTS AND CRAFTS A FREE program sponsored by the Recreation Department is our Arts and Crafts Sessions. This program is geared towards the 5-12 age group but anyone may participate. Our instructor will guide children in many creative efforts that can challenge their skills and tempt their imaginations. Come and join in the FUN at your local playground on the following days and times beginning June 6.
The Recreation Department has established a tradition of offering camps in different sports at an extremely reasonable price. There are many outstanding camps that cost $150 to $250 for the week. Our goal is to offer the same camp experience to every boy and girl at an affordable price. A brief explanation for each camp follows. BASEBALL CAMP Play baseball with us this summer. Camp will be held July 11-14. Children ages 5-12 can get tips and instruction in the fine art of running, hitting, sliding and pitching from some of the area’s finest coaches at the Chambers I-470 Complex. Camp director will be Mark Delbrugge, American Legion Post #1 Coach and American Legion Post #1 players. Campers receive a t-shirt and daily refreshment. July 11 – 14, 9am – 12pm NOON

Wheeling Skate Park Summer Shred Drop in to a summer of FREE skateboarding events at the city’s skate park. A kick-off event June 3rd will have professional skaters, vendors, and instructors. Girls and boys will learn the basics of skating to build on throughout the summer. The program is run by Lara Graves and Jeane-Anne Renshaw.

FAST PITCH SOFTBALL CAMP
The Wheeling Recreation Department will sponsor Fast Pitch Softball Camp from July 11 through July 14 at the Chambers I-470 Complex. Camp will be for girls ages 5-12 and will run from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. This camp will have an outstanding staff featuring Sara Pelegreen, Wheeling Jesuit University Coach and players from WJU. Campers will get instruction on hitting using up-to-date instructional hitting aids. Emphasis will be given in fundamentals of fielding, base running and fast pitch pitching. All campers will receive a t-shirt and daily refreshment.

Softball Pitching Clinic
The Wheeling Recreation Department is sponsoring fast pitch pitching lesson for grades 1 to 12. Sessions will be held at the I-470 Ball Fields starting August 7 and ending August 10, 2017. Coach John Ritz, veteran instructor from Bellaire, will serve as primary instructor. Instruction will be individual and geared to your abilities. Classes will be limited to provide maximum instruction. Balls will be provided but each pitcher must bring her glove.

SOCCER CAMP The Wheeling Recreation Department will sponsor its 3rd Soccer Camp on July 18-21. Our goal is to offer a great instructional camp at an inexpensive cost. With the addition of the new turf field in Wheeling, it has allowed us to expand our many sports camps to now include soccer. Our camp is designed to allow kids to be introduced to the game of soccer and to begin learning the fundamental skills needed to play the sport. Camp directors will be Bill Konkle and Aubrey Taylor. Both directors are area youth soccer coaches.

BASKETBALL CAMPS The Wheeling Recreation Basketball Camp enters its 40th season and is recognized as one of the finest camps in the Tri-State area. Ask any of the nearly 13,000 boys and girls who have attended since our inception in 1978. There will be two sessions this year at the BRIDGE STREET MIDDLE SCHOOL. The boys and girls camp, grades 4-8, will be held from 9:00 a.m. to Noon on July 27 - July 30. A Biddy Basketball camp for boys and girls grades 1-3 will also be held on July 27 - July 30 - 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be full court games and contests in each grade level. Instructions in rebounding and defense, body balance and pivoting, passing and catching, ball handling and dribbling, shooting and foul shooting. Director Coach J.R. Battista of Bellaire H.S. for both camps for the afternoon session.
Boys & Girls Basketball Camp Bridge Street Middle School July 27 – 30 ($30 pre-register, $40 after June 19, 2017) Grades 4 – 8, 9am - 12pm NOON Grades 1 – 3, 1pm - 3pm We encourage everyone to register by July 26, 2017. Pre-registration is $30 and includes a t-shirt and daily refreshment. Registration after July 26, 2017 will be $40. If you’re serious about basketball, we’re looking for you.
Basketball Leagues The Wheeling Recreation High School Summer League starts its 43rd season of play on June 1. It is one of the largest summer leagues in the United States involving nearly 100 teams of high school and junior high age boys and girls. Boys’ league begins on June 1. Girls’ league will begin on July 2. Play will continue through end of July. If you are interested in participating, contact your school coach. Leagues include Varsity, Reserve, Freshman & Jr. Pro (7th & 8th Grades). It is still not too late to sign up for any league. THE SHOOTOUTS Wheeling will host two exciting basketball festivals this summer at Linsly School, Wheeling Park High School and Wheeling Jesuit University. The boys tournament will feature 32 teams from West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio, while the girls tournament will feature 16 teams from West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Maryland. Come & enjoy exciting high school basketball action.
