Summer 2017 News Summer Interns 2017 We began the summer with a great Intern Retreat at Camp Allendale! We did some team-building, but mostly we simply got to know each other and made sure we spent plenty of time worshipping, eating and fellowshipping! The retreat was followed by two weeks of diverse and purposeful training. The goal is to give the Summer Interns enough understanding of the things that will help make their time leading and mentoring participants from church groups, encouraging and beneficial to all. Training consists of basic First Aid, Leadership Tips and field work such as the painting to the far right. It also includes experiential things such as a Simulation Experience where the interns travel around by city bus and visit various ministries and agencies to learn what services are available for folks who find themselves in homelessness. It is a highlight of the Intern Training. Sharing life with and loving on the Interns for the full summer is a very fruitful thing Mission Indy is privileged to be a part of. As we prepare & challenge these students, God is faithful to equip them for the life He calls them to.

Week # 2 Grace Church Host We were blessed to work with Walnut Community Bible Church from Illinois! Here the group has finished the demolition work at a home for a new church plant called Impact the Old Southside. They removed walls, floors and much more! 1st UMC from Gas City, IN worked a couple of days with City Life West, doing some interior demolition as well as scraping paint off these old porch columns to get ready for painting. Then they moved tons of rock and built a retaining wall in the Old Southside.

The theme we are studying for 2017 is the One Another passages which talk about how those of the Body of Christ are to treat each other. Jesus gave us the great command in John 13:34—”that you love one another even as I have loved you…” Passages like Romans 15:7 (Accept One Another), Galatians 6:2 (Bear One Another’s Burdens) and Galatians 5:13 (Honor One Another) were fun to study and listen to messages about. Jesus said by the love we show each other in the Body of Christ, the world will know that we are His disciples. God never meant for us to be on our own as followers of Jesus, but to live and grow in the community of faith, sharing life and all it’s messiness with each other. When we do that well, the world will notice and want to know this Jesus! How we treat each other will tell the story of Jesus, one way or the other.

Three church groups spent the last week of July with MI. Cadiz CC and Fairfield CC are both from Indiana while New Hope Church is from Effingham, Illinois. This group was so big we had to split them into three service teams. The one at the right built two retaining walls. A 2nd team from New Hope got down & dirty at City Life West with interior demolition. Fairfield CC worked with Active Grace, a fairly new ministry working with the homeless of Hendricks & Morgan counties. They spent one day at the farm harvesting produce. Other days they spent at Camp Camby doing everything from landscaping to cleaning motel rooms and sorting out things for a garage sale. Cadiz CC served at the Old Southside finishing a retaining wall & clearing out a small park Then they went to serve with Indy Internationals the last two days. Indy Internationals works with and houses international students, most of whom are Muslim, in order to build relationships and share life together. Much good work was accomplished but more than that, many truths about the One Another passages were learned and discussed throughout the week. We pray for encouragement and motivation as these churches engage their neighbors back home.
